fAGE FOUR Nat. Airlines Petitions CAB | To Reconsider National Airlines has petition- | ed CAB for reconsideration of its | application for service to Jamaica, | Colombia and the Canal Zone, company officials announced to- | day. The NAL petition followed one by Colonial Airlines, after both | companies and Eastern Air Lines | had been twice denied in the! “Additional Service to Latin America” case. National's tion took note of this, but stressed that “National is an ac- tive applicant for the Canal Zone route, and if any further consid- | eration is to be given this matter; National wished to aggressively | pursue its application.” The petition added that Na-, tional is ready and willing to un- } dertake the service at ahy time. The record in the case, it was stated, demonstrates “substantial need” for direct one carrier serv- ice between the Canal Zone, Colombia and Jamaica, and oth- i i i} er points on the eastern coast of } \ the United States. The record} further demonstrates, it con-| tinued, that National is the car- rier best able to provide that service. Among specific points | made were that National is in! position to provide as much or! more service than other ap- | plieants; that NAL would add far | Jess new route mileage to pr ‘ovide | j the service; that NAL would not | be duplicating as much present | route mileage flown by other | lines as would any other appli-' cant. | Antonio Garcia Died This A.M. S.-Elling- son said this morning that he did not believe that the 1947 prop- erty tax rete, to be recommend- ed to the City Commission at a special meeting at 5 p. m., today, will be any lower than the 1946 rate. He said the city attorney was still working on the proposed ordinanee so he couldn't say whether it would be any higher. The meeting is called also to approve an amendment to Ordi- nance 381, allowing an increase: in the license fee for sale of beer | and wines from $15 to $50 and to permit a $25 fee for places sell- ing beer and wine for consump- tion off the premises. | The proposal is to implement a new State Beverage Act permit- ting increase in the license fees. | SCHOOL COOPERATION | {Continued tron Page One» ters with Supt. of Public Instruc- | tions Willard Albury, who ex-! plained that Marcellus is already | a 12-month man, The official | added that he now has 64 com- munities contacting him regard- ie * recreational programs. ‘an Fleet conferred with City Manager O. Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Inde- pendence was signed, celebrated the first an- niversary with a banquet. — SHOOTING UP THE TOWN common on the “grand and glorious” day,’ BONFIRES in Wall St. (above) were among New York's first patriotic expressions on July 4. The city paid for refreshments, which on the 10th anniversary included 150 gal- lons of punch, 130 bottles of wine. On the 50th Independence Day, 10,000 persons at- tended a public feast in Washington Square. soon became as shown above. “All the town was in arms,” said a diarist. A magistrate, curi- , ous about the patriotism of 20 men caught shooting in streets, asked each his nation- ality. Only two were Americans. LAWS AGAINST ‘the sale of firecrackers and other explosives were passed in town after town. “Little old New York” tried such a law as early as 1748, but forgot it to cele brate repeal of the Stamp Act in 1766. To. day restrictions have taken some bang out of the Fourth, as shown, to make it safe. THE TOLL OF DEAD and injured from fire- works and bullets instead of blanks stag- gered the nation. Cartoons like this funeral procession helped to crystalize public opin- ion against senseless hazards that maimed children for life. Each year saw more san- ply in the celebrations.
