MONOGRAPHS -To the Radio Fans: *For years The Citizen has charged fo# the publication of radio listings, and noW both the Miami Herald and the Mi- ami News have adopted the same course. Why not? Radio is well paid by the sponsors for the broadeasts, and in order to inerease the number of listen- erg, the owners Should advertise their programs in the newspapers, not only foy their own benefit but for the con- vehience of the listeners as well. THE ORACLE. ‘ UNNECESSARY OPERATIONS? “American medicine, including surg- ery; is undoubtedly .the finest in the world,” ‘declares Dr. Albert Deutsch, in an article appearing in July’s Woman’s Home Companion, but he charges that “many of jthe 9,000,000 surgical operations per- formed annually in America are unneces- sary.” ‘It is an amazing allegation made by the author in this responsible magazine. He says, “Every year thousands of ana- tomieal parts from tonsils to stomachs are cub away or taken out because of faulty diagnosis, over-zealous surgeons, fee-split- ting conspiracies ar an inexcusable sur- renider to the morbid wish of some pa- tients to be cut open.” : We know of no way in which any pro- tession can prevent mistakes being made through ignorance or through incompe- tency, because members of professions are merely human beings, but the ‘‘fee-split- ting’ conspiracies” constitute an allega- tioh that should receive attention from responsible medical men. It might be noted in this connection that such a practice has been observed in larger communities but, generally speak- ing,,{it is not prevalent in smaller areas, like .Key West, where people know eaeh othef’on a more intimate basis. ._The American College of Surgeons and other reputable medical societies have re- peatedly condemned fee-splitting but, ac- cording ‘to critics, have been unable to stop it. Fee-splitting the practice of is REASON FOR HIGH PRICES * One of the most remarkable things about citizens of the United States is that, though scattered about in territory extend- ing from the Canadian te the Mexican border and the Atlantic to the Pacific, their thinking about major issues in Wash- ington generally runs along the same lines. Of course, there is no unanimity of opinion, but the basic attitude is similar. For instance, we have hearé residents of Key West and several other cities in the United States assert that the federal gov- ernment should stop giving so much meney fer se-ealled rehabilitation in foreign coun- + tries. That money, it is pointed out, is used to buy foedstuffs and raw materials in the United States for shipment abroad. And what is the result? Not. only is. the taxpayer giving the money for the purchases but also, as a re- sult of the purchases, prices of. eommodi- ties in the United States continue to in- ; crease, as much as 50 per cent in the last year on some products, as was noted in an Associated Press dispatch in The Citizen a few days ago. That extra cost comes out of his pocket. : It is equivalent to a taxpayer’s operat- ing economically against himself. . By shipments of foodstuffs and raw materiais from the United States, the supply is kept below the demand, and, nattrally, prices show upward trends. When supply goes prices come down, but, since the war, that circumstance has oceurred in only a few cases, as the foreign drain on the surplus, or supposed surplus, keens the home sup- ply on a level lower than the demand. Not until the government euts down ou its buying for foreign countries can the people at home have sound reason to be assured that the cost of living will de- crease. An argument is the difference of opin- ion between two ignorant people. The Chicago Tribune celebrated its 100th anniversary this month. It was founded June 10, 1847. In its first issue it declared: “The Chicago Tribune will be | neutral in nothing; it will be independent in everything.” Cocky, with a circulation of 400! From this low of 400, The Trib- une has inereased its Sunday average cir- culation to 1,098,000, which means, ac- cording to Time, that the Sunday edition alone requires more newspfint than is re- .| quired by all the newspapers in Mississippi for an entire year. A STOVE IS FIREPROOF A stove is an excellent example of “fireproof” construction. It remains intact while its contents burn. The tact is that many buildings adver- tised as “fireproof,” are like stoves. They are loade with combustible contents that provide sufficient fuel to feed large fires. This was the case with the Winecoff hotel. Tis uaked walls stand today undam- aged, although smoke-scorched, in At- | 10 lanta, Georgia. Mention of the Winecoff brings to mind the furore throughout the nation to im- prove the safety of hotels and other places where people congregate in large numbers. Apparently, the public mind has been lulled to rest. Another tragic fire. wili re- awaken interest in building safety. Secretary Morgenthau will be required to appear before a Congressional commit- tee to explain why he permitted the Rus- sian government to get our plates for printing millions of notes which the Unit- ed States is required to. honor with good Ameriean dollars. Morgenthau promised { the committee that this would never be done-——but lo and behold! This is not stupid; it is eviminal.
