May 21, 1947: . MODERN POLI POLITICIAN. Editor, The Citizen: politicians would announce them- selves with impossible i The “Oracle” is certainly right in his convictions, except he under- estimates the modern politician. Instead. of promises, action of some kind will take place, which will serve to throw the public. off balance. A move by politicians now in office to give the public some- thing for nothing, is a favorite play. This tends to make the voter forget the past, and think of him as a pretty good fellow. It usually works, too. Another comparatively ‘new scheme is the organizing of so- called civic clubs. A large mem- bership is obtained, including a high percentage of business men, who unsuspectingly donate funds: which are used for. the. cause. These clubs or organizations serve simply to lift a man or mén who have mired themselves in public distaste. A lot of false propagan- da is also thrown in: There are many other meth- ods, so be alert. To be sure of yourself, check the _ politician’s record, if he has one. Did he prove of value? Did he do and act as you expected when you voted for him? .Did-he try to lower your tax burden? Did he give.you more for your tax dol- lar, or did he squander it? Fin- ally, was he a part of fair, pro- the white and negro — and has rendered excellent ‘ice to us. I have always found him courteous, efficient, willing and able. I say let us fight to keep Mr. Sawyer and Mr: Roberts a where they are. Fs fete I ask, are there any political: — interests, fights or grudges moti- vating this act in the legislature? . If there are not, then we deserve - as taxpayers and the people who elect our public servants, to know - just what all this is about. Yes, we have no bananas’ because some one just tossed one under public confidence and it is going : to take a lot of explaining. to stop it from’ skidding. - ALBERT G.
