The first book to appear under the new.program will be a group of hitherto. unknown sketches written by Mark Twain about his Mississippi River and small-town boyhood which furnished the scene for “Tom Sawyer” and “Huckleberry Finn.” A manuscript which he label- ed “Villagers of 1840-43”" de- scribes with humor, sympathy and sgmetimes unsparing frank- ness, Wecter says, his old neigh- bors in Hannibal, Missouri, whose lives inspired the plot situations of his best known books and| suggested still others he hoped some: day, to write.
