We are not strong enough as an in- dividuak. nation to resist all ag- gression, to prevent all war and to keep the peace of this earth. But, as the leader of the United Nations and with that organiza- tion functioning as its Charter League of Nations. And that pol-. icy killed the League of Nations _ made inevitable World War 1. ‘We stayed. out of the League of Nations. after World War 1 and thereby helped to weaken that organization so. it. could not keep world. peace. That failure may have, cost us our sacrifices in blood and treasure in World War 11. Hut we learned our les- son. We gaw. our ,sistake. We were conve ‘collaboration by baptism in the sacrifiee of this war to the new function of: working with other nations toward keeping world peace. Hence, through President Raose- velt, we took the lead in setting up, the United. Nations. The United Nations today has a membership of over fifty nations. It ‘has been established here in the United States. It is a func- tioning organization.. A great} building is about to be construct- éd honorably to house it. It got Russian troops out of Iran. It gotp British and French troops out of Syria and Lebanon. It has set up the World Bank, the World Food Organization and the World Health gages It establish- ae yr ye years a pr bit Now when there is a border disturbance. in northern Greece and when Rus- sia has made some demands about the Dardanelles to Turk- ey, we rush _ into unilateral action. We start to send military missions to Turkey and to Greece to. support Turkish and Greeg armies to protect the security of those nations. We did not even notify the United Nations Organ- ization until sixteen days after the President addressed the Joint session of the Congress. Now what some of us have done in the Senate and the pres- sure that has come from the equntry have been responsible fot a considerable modification of the original proposal. We now have agreed that the United Na- tions can stop us by a, mafority vote. But when we joined the United Nations, we and all other nations agreed to act collectively to. preserve the peace of the ,world and ‘to resist aggression. ‘Going through the United Na- tions is like settling a dispute in court. You either do or you don’t. Yet I am not an isolationist. I believe in collaboration, I earn- estly want to help Greece. I want to protect the security of their people in their country. I want to resist the spread of com. munism in every propeP way.
