Mammals, including the. huge mammoths, skeletons of which may be seen in any museum of “natural history, were compara- tively recent as gauged by the earlier forms of life. It is not uncommon to find the flesh of mammoths preserved in the froz- en. barrens of the far Northwest and in Siberia, where predatory animals such as wolves, fox and similar, occasionally unearth and eat. perfectly preserved mam- moth meat. The above paragraphs may seem unnecessary in an article dealing with the mineral deposits of the Northwest Territories, but they help the laymen, (as they have’ this writer) to understand some of the terminology em- ployed by mining engineers and geologists who analyze rock structure. These men know that certain types of rock can be expected to contain certain types of minerals, because the minerals and the rocks in which they came to rest originated at approximately the same time. Thus, when talking of the Precambrian Shield, geol- ogists refer to a period in which the Shield was formed. As the various ages came and went enormous changes occurred in the face of the earth, including many intrusions of lava, great folding action in the earth’s sur- face; the raising of great chains of mountains, which in time eroded away only to be replaced by other ranges at later dates.
