THE KEY WEST CITIZEN ° ~™ i aaibetemeenemmnmedl OBSERVATION POST BILL LEE | ~MARDUUUEGEAUOEAUOAUAAOGAA AGATE EAA? Raymond G. Navarro believes in boosting Key, West. . Ray runs the sightseeing trips with a bus he operates from Duval and Fleming streets. The bus seats 11 besides himself and his dog, which perches on top for the trip. When Ray gets a load, off the bus goes. And so does Ray’s tongue, at the rate of better than a mile a minute. To listen to Ray extoll the virtues of Key West is an education in the history of the city. "You don’t pay me until you make the trip”, is Navar- ro’s way of starting. "Then if you come back and say you , didn’t enjoy it, the trip’s on the house—or bus. “You should glean more in- formation about Key West than you can get in any other way. I will say that it is a most in- structive trip. Well, here we go.” He points out the three radio towers at the Naval Station ex- plaining they form a most pow- erful radio contact with the outside world. In rapid succes- sion Navarro point. out: , The County Court House, which he says is the ‘seat of government of the longest coun- ty in the United States. The Oid Marine Hospital in the Naval Base is one of the old- est in the country. That an 80-mile-an-hour hurricane is only a zephyer, and that only two men ever have been killed by storms on the island of Key West. "They were caught out in in the storms”, Navarro says. “Other folks remained in their own homes. And they were not injured. Strange isn’t it?” He points out the Japanese submarine in the Naval Base, saying it was a two-man job to operate it. “’m the only driver in..town that will take you to-.the! Navy Base”, Navarro. states, as he turns ‘into the yard, Then he points: ‘out, in quick succession, old’ Fort’ Taylor, old Post Office building, where he says some bricks! wete-once flung out - of | line inva a high | wind; the nurpber. of submarines and other vesels in the base; tells when the concrete pier,,in the yard was built. In Duval Street he stops for a few moments in front of St. | Paul's. Episcopal .Church, relai- ing its early history: points to the oldest house in Key West, and tells how the widow Caro- line Lowe ‘used to fly the Con- federate Flag from her home and hid the flag in the walls of her little tower above the house. Navarro next goes down Caro- line Street as far as Thompson’s turtle docks. But on the way he tells of the beauties of the flowering trees and shrubs that pass enroute, and names them. He has some rather tall tales to tell about the turtles. To hear Navarro tell it the turtles are all from 400 to 500 years old when brought to the turtle crawls and the visitors he takes along be- lieve him. “They're caught in water 50 to 75 feet deep off the coast of Nicaragua”, Navarro says. - He explains the turtle .soup business from A to Z, telling what parts of the turtles be- come steaks, what parts bouil- lon and what parts scrap. He goes up Grinnell Street to the Cemetary and tells all the way about the limberger tree that grows a fruit that smells exact- ly like the real thing. He picks a bit of fruit from one limberger tree and lets the passengers on | the bus smell it. In the Cemetery, he points out the old graves. Then he turns to the Maine Memorial plot and indicates the number of graves of the sailors who were aboard the vessel and who died as re- | sult of the sinking of the ship in Havana, is. attempting to give Key West aj usual pleasant stay in.
