The Citizen suggests that the best course for those Key Westers, and others who feel as they do, to pur- sue in that regard is to at- tend the public Hesring on the Widget in City Hall on the night of February 11. Naturally, taxpayers ex- esi pect beneficial returns for their. money, and they will be given an oportunity to learn, by attending the meeting, the causes for the excess amounts provided in the budget. Two benefits are out- standing, police and fire protection, but the only in- creases in salaries in that respeet concern two Negro policemen, whose salaries, will, eventually, be placed on a level with that received by white policemen. That is commendable ac- tion, but it does not go far encugh. Policemen and fire- men, particularly firemen who work 84 hours a week, should be paid more, but the increase in salaries, with the two exceptions noted, go to employes in the upper brackets. A third benefit of conse- quence should have been the city’s streets, which are in deplorable condition, but in- stead of providing more money for their improve- ment, the amount provided in the budget for streets for this fiscal vear is less than for the last year. Besides. with the streets in poorer condition now than they were last year, 10 men em- in repairing streets are to be discharged. “How about the streets?” that would be a good ques- tion to ask the commission at the February 11 hearing.
