PAGE FOUR Band Instruments Needed By School; Many Have Talent, An appeal was made today by J. R. Marcellus, director of music at Key West High school, for Key Westers to dust off all un- used musical instruments and place them in the hands of talent- ed school students. A music talent testing. program has been discovered that 60 stu- school system from the 5th through the 8th grades, Marcell- us said, and while all of the re- sults have not been tabulated, there is every indication that a! large number of Key West child- ren possess a musical talent. It has ben discovered that 60 stu- dents in the 5th, 6th. 7th grades have better than an average musical talent. When all of the results have been listed there should be a considerably larger number. The tests known as the Sea- shore Talent Measures, have proved their worth, in many school systems, music schools, and colleges, in discovering musi- cal talent without a trial-and- error method, Marcellus explain- ed. If the person with a musical talent uses that talent, his chances of success are practically guaran- teed, he said The test, however, only indi- cates that the talent is there or not. The test itself has taken over thirty years for its development and has been pronounced ver highly reliable by eminent psy- chologists and educational authorities One hundred boys and girls on musical instruments by the first of September is the ambitious goal aimed at by the High school band in its intensive campaign to reorganize and make perma- nent the instrumental music pro- gram in the public schools. This aim is handicapped by the lack of instruments to place in the hands of these talented school youngsters Many of these talented school children wish to buy instruments, but due to the shortage of medi- um-priced instruments they have been unable to secure them. Marcellus pointed out. Others cannot afford to buy instruments. Residents having an_ instru- ment that is usable, or which can be vepaired should contact Marcellus, at the High School, phone 833, or E. S. Yates, 800 White street, phone 203. Yates is treasurer of the Monroe County rhool Music Association. Any offer to rent, sell, or donate the instrument outright, will be glad- ly accepted by the Asociation, Knowleses Have Son Mr. and Mrs. William Knowles, 1313 Pine Street, announce the birth of weighing seven pounds, ten o at Municipal Hospital. a son, unces, yesterday Son Born To Whitesells A seven-pound was born to Mr Whitesell, 10 Nassau Lane, at 8 pm. yesterday at Municipal Hos- one-ounce boy pital Whyms Have 10-Pound Girl Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Mike) Whyms announce the arrival of 10-pound girl, Yvonne, at their me, 1012 Olivia Street, at 3:30 m. tod TWINS EXP {NDING GARAGE BUILDING Garage, the southern- the United States, zes in automobile and body and fender work d@itior t ut 41130 Duval street At the present time a building 40 feet squa is being erected bout $3,000.
