That thought came to mind by reading an item in The Citizen about the visit here of Samuel W. Curry. In the days twhen his father was an auctioneer in Key West, shipping to and from Key West involved the handling of millions of dol- lars of goods annually. Steamships, loaded with freight, came here from New York, Galveston and New Orleans, and schoon- ers, also with cargoes, arriv- ed from Cuba and central America. Banana Sckoon- ers made regular trips, most of them from Jamaica, and pineapples for local con- sumption came here from Cuba, Besides, many other types of Cuban fruits, not seen in Key West for a good many years, arrived here to be sold at the auction rooms, It is incongruous that Key West, an island city, should not be a seaport of conse- quence.
