E. Thompson, who had been elected lieutenant governor in the election last November, was inaugurated in the senate cham- ber as Arnall’s successor. But Herman Talmadge, who was named governor by the leg- islature, asserted that he disre- garded the proceedings that {made ‘Thompson governor, de- claring they were illegal, and that he, Talmadge, was the “real governor of Georgia.” He added, in reply to Arnall’s reference to Talmadge as a pretender, that he did not recognize the legality of Arnall’s suit to have the supreme court decide who is governor. | “The legislature already has de- cided that,” Talmadge concluded. Arnall, after his resignation, said he had withstood “insults and indignities” from Talmadge and his supporters because he did not wish to cast reflections on his office. He had kept bis promise, he added, not to resign till Thompson was ready to be inaugurated. Thompson intended to wait tall Monday to be sworn in, but, om the advice of Attorney General Eugene Cook, who is siding with the Arnall forces, he decided to be inaugurated —_ immediately Cook explained that the Tal- madge forces were ready to grasp vy.
