PAGE FOUR ° WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1947 Commission Gives Vets Extra Credit; Passes Other Bills The City Commission acted up- on several measures last night which were more or less subordi- nated by the more prominent is- sues brought up. A recommendation by the Civil Service Commission that veterans taking examinations for municipal positions be given ex- tra credit was passed unani- mously on first reading. Veterans will get five points extra credit, disabled veterans 19 points and widows of veterans 10 points. An application of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Higgs, 2850 Seiden- berg avenue, for a city Home- stead Exemption was referred back to City Ass or -H. L. El- wood, although Elwood had turn- ed thumbs down on the applica- tion in a notation attached to the letter. Elwood’s grounds were that the applicants had not act- ed in accordance with Section 7, Article X of the State Consti- tution requiring that claims for homestead exemption should be made on or before April 1 of the year which exemption is sought. Carvoza, once a well known piteher, in the County Jail Mon- day night came up for discyssion at the meeting of the Monroe County Commission last night. Carvoza died shortly after his removal to County Jail from Key West Municipal Hospital. County Attorney Paul Sawyer was instryeted by the commission to study the request of Mrs. Isa- bel Fleming, former probation officer, for back salary amount- ing to about $900. He will report at the meeting next Tuesday. There is some question wheth- er Mrs. Fleming served the en- tire time from her appointment to the period when she was _re- lieved. On recommendation of Dr. James B. Parramore, County Health Officer, the board sent five cases to the state institu- tion for treatment of tubercu- losis. The county pays $1.25 a day for the hospitalization of Monroe, patients. Dr. Papgamore reported that there are seven or eight other citizens who must be sent to the tuberculosis hospital.
