To Start Patch A strong contender for the largest yam (sweet potato) ever grown in Key West was lugged into The Citizen office this morning by Lain Dobbs, 1008 Watson Street. The ex- hibit measured more than two feet long and weighed 24 pounds, The yam was grown by Angelo Pereira, 1004 Watson Street, among the rocks along- side his home. Pereira grows about 20 hills of yams a year, planting them in January and harvesting them the follow- ing January. He gives them away to his neighbors and uses them extensively to sup- plement the family larder. Dobbs was so impressed by Pereira’s harvest this year that he is going to plant a good-sized yam patch near Key West.
