That means some uncouth in- dividuals have a long way to go. * Yours truly, THE ORACLE. eat et ea a a a SEEKING THEIR LEVEL That sturdy and irrestible law of supply and demand, as The Citizen has remark- ed often during the last year, in discussing the high cost of living, is gradually coming back into its own. Butter, a commodity that some Key Westers said they! could not obtain for as long as three or four months during the war and also at timés since V-J Day, was hit hard on the wholesale mar- ket a few days ago in fore- ing it back to its level of supply and demand. The wholesale price fell asmuch as 12 cents a pound, a record decrease for one day. But butter is still beyond} its pre-war level, and, as the supply increases, due more to cutting down the overseas ‘shipments of it than to greater production at home, the price will con- tinue to readjust itself. Sugar, still under govern- ment control, will be dis- tributed in greater quanti- ties early next year. One stamp becomes valid in Jan- uary and another on April 1, but the government an- nounced that another stamp will be given to housewives between those dates. Be- side Republican leaders have announced that they are going to advocate the distribution of 10 pounds more of sugar to every household between the Jan- uary and April dates, aside from the extra stamp the government has said it will! grant during the first quar- ter of 1947. Key ‘West housewives will tell you that beef, for which they were clamoring a few. months ago, is now pientiful and obtainable at prices far below what they were shortly after OPA be- came ineffective on June 30. And so it goes. It won't be long now before all com- modities will be readjusted in prices. As supplies in- crease, com petition in- creases, and prices, like wa- ter, seek their level in com- plying with the law of sup- ply and demand.
