Elling- son today denied having inten- tions of suspending two police of- ficers for their alleged refusal to return gambling devices to Sloppy Joe’s Bar from which they had been seized. ‘ He said he had not seen pub- lished reports that he contem- plated suspending the officers. “If the officers do their duty, T surely would not recommend their dismissal,” Ellingson said. “I know it is not up to the police to return gambling equipment.” The city manager said that Mu- nicipal Judge Enrique Esquinal- do had handled the entire matter and he had no intentions of inter- fering with the court’s action. At Municipal Court yesterday Judge Esquinaldo dismissed charg- es preferred against Sloppy Joe’s by Patrolman Harry Lee Baker and Frank Caraballo, the officers who had seized two roulette wheels and a “Beat-the-Dealer” game. Bru- tus and I had my Edward PY Terry; ahd Terry was the worst of the three traitors,” Senator Senator Theodore G. Bilbo, of Mississippi, declared today in his testimony before the senate sub- committee investigating war con- tracts. Bilbo took the stand in his own behalf. Shaking his finger angrily, he asserted, in speaking of his former secretary, Terry, as a “vile, tazy, vicious traitor,” who had resorted to “hallucina- tions” in telling about Bilbo’s dealings. Bilbo then referred to himself as a “poor man.” He admitted having received two Christmas presents, an automobile and liv- ingroom furniture, and that he had “borrowed” $1,500 to help make a settlement with his for- mer wife. Senator Homer Ferguson, Re- publican, of Michigan, asked Bil- a it was customary, where re were no favors, relationship or’ strong friendship. involved, for anybody to give an automo- bile and a suite of furniture as Christmas presents, and Bilbo re-, plied that he had received them from a “close. friend.” Bilbo had his testimony writ- ten and asked for permission to read it without interruption, but Chairman James M. Mead ruled that when, any statement that feeded cibntication was made, tse or any other member of the committee was privileged to ask questions. Most of the false information that had been made _ publie against him, Bilbo said, was traceable to Ross Collins, whom he had defeated for the Demo- cratic nomination for senator from Mississippi. It was Collins, Bilbo charged, who had given out the “malicious lie” that he, Bilbo, had arranged to obtain a nar- cotics permit for a “dope” addict on the payment of $1,500. There was not a figment of truth to the charge, Bilbo | boomed, and it was the emana- { s from “traitorous hallucina- j ’ He added that he had never heard about the alleged occurrence until he had seen the story in print. i | | i ca RES EN RET CASA CAYO HUESO (The Svuthernmost House) 1400 Duval at South St. DINING ROOM and COCKTAIL LOUNGE ———Opens 5 P.M.
