Quinby, wife of Commander Quinby, retired, was looking at the spacious Casa Marina grounds, which are directly across from her residence at the corner of Flagler Avenue and Reynolds street, when, lo and behold, what should come strolling up the sidewalk, unconcern- ed, without seemingly a wor- ry in the world, but a large raccoon, Mrs. Quinby said that un- mistakably it was a raccoon as there was the pointed nose and rings on the tail. The large fellow leisurely crossed the street, entering the vacant lot near the Casa Marina greenshouse, and then disappeared from view. The commander's wife is not certain whether the rac- coon is a pet of someone—his “devil-may-care” attitude seemingly bearing out this line of thought. However, the raccoon may have been confused by the high winds on the Keys Monday and may have come to Key West for protection against the elements. At any rate, there is,a large raccoon unleashed in the Casa Marina area! When the new, permanent meters. are installed, half of the “take” will go to the city and half to the firm which supplies the devices. The meters now in use are only temporary. The permanent meters will be in- stalled when the well-known “shortage of everything” allows them to be manufactured. The odd cents listed in the above report by the city tax col- lector may seem queer to some but there are still motorists who believe they can get a nickel’s worth of parking for a penny. However, pennies do not start the time mechanism of the me- ters, although the gadgets col- lect the “coppers” just the same. . ‘A number of motorists in a hurry or unwilling to take the time to obtain change, drop dimes into the meters and in doing so they are “out” that amount as this monetary denomination does} not “work” in the devices, either. Thus, motorists find themselves paying much more than required for the legal parking period. Nevertheless, the downtown motorist who fails to “feed” the meters because he hasn't a nickel in change may find him- self paying more than a dime, which he may have in his pocket, for illegal parking.
