Urey, noted _ s@ientist, who says that the ‘4 United States faces a Choice | would’ ost’ et of waging war to contro] the world before other nations| P get the atomic bomb or of forming some effective ma- chinery of international con- trol to protect all nations from the bomb. Dr. Urey bases his think- ing upon the fact that (1) there is no military develop- ment against the bomb, (2) it is impossible to prevent others from discovering its secret, (3) the bombs can be made cheaply and in large numbers, and (4) if war breaks out they will be used and will destroy our civilization. + The idea expressed by the distinguished chemist is not altogether new _ because there have been suggestons from other sources that the atomic bomb will -be’ the: means of giving the United States control over the world. He finds no solution to the problem except “the aboli- tion of war” and, if this proves impossible, hints that the United States should Wage a war of world con- quest and subsequently po- lige and control the world. This alternative, he admits, is one that he does not “con- template with any pleasure” "> but he adds that it is one » «-“which may be a strict ne- ~... essity.” Tt is the business of every "majority to prevent any min- ~ ority from having its way. . ‘(he wise man never runs awav from facts and is not afraid of discovering the truth. Pleasures increase and sorrows decrease — when shared by others. Too many selfishly desire to share the pleasures but not the sor- rows. The traffic toll for the first six months of 1946 was 15.750:killed and 540.000 injured. Nearly all of these deaths and injuries might have been avoided if the driving had been careful. | mission 7 |in winter resorts of any ‘ACTION Now ESSENTIAL It. would be a three-league py} Stride for Key West if we could obtain a Pan-Ameri- can highway terminal, such as was discussed at 4 meeting of the Key West Business Men’s Association. It was estimated that the proposed terminal would cost $5,000,- 000, and, naturally, that es- timate poses a question : Where is the $5,000,000 coming from? It was suggested that the city, county and the Over- seas Road and Toll Bridge District raise a’ revolving fund of $5,000, 000. In the first "place, the Overseas district is not le- gally empowered to.enter in- to such an undertaking; and, in the second place, the city and county are now stag- gering under purdensome taxation. The Citizen feels confi- dent that the association is sincere in its efforts to pro- mote the interests of this community, so here are a few suggestions of things that may be accomplished now to help us the coming winter: The eounty commissioners have agreed to give $2,500 to a fund to advertise Key West'in' newspapers in Flor- ida, ours of this city, if the city 4 _ Overseas. com- j, contribute a similar J Let the " ciation’ ascer- tain what! ity and the bridge commission have done in that regard, and, as- suming they have not done anything, urge them to make the appropriation. With $7,500 Key Wes could be advertised effec- tively in Miami, St. Peters burg and other Florida newspapers outside of Key West. Anybody who has been consequence in Florida knows that shuffleboard courts are provided for the use of tourists, many of whom, , particularly elderly a tested i persons; are: that sport,.Ehq!court, which. would not cost much; can built in Bayview Park. lawns , court off bowling less. That ny is pastime, too, among tourists. {Let the association get be- hind movements to provide, small things of that nature —things that can be accom- plished before the beginning of. the coming séason. | Poverty is no disgrace, but it is terribly inconven- ient. But, it, should be re- membered, that most of the best things in life were born in poverty. Ever so many artists, writers, composers! and creators of wealth, etc., tasted its bitter dregs, be-| fore achieving success. Pov-| erty is inspirational, and prods to achievement, but it must be limited or r else is a failure. GOING TO THE MOON2 sar i ¢ There’is ‘ho waytito bridje the imaginative, | rocesss and alréady s ople are speaking | optimistically ‘of dispatching an expedition to the moon. s Recently, one of the larg- est popular magazines de- voted considerable space to a lengthy demonstration of the possibility of using rockets to send men to the moon. There were copious detaiis as to how the expedi- tion would reach the moon, | explore the surface and then return to earth. Now, comes Brig.-Gen. Henry B. Sayler, Chief of Ordnance Developments for the Army, who Bays that guided missiles: wit!’ possibly reach the moon’ in’ “about ten years” but that this will mean putting a “chunk of iron about the size of your fist on.the moon.)’ If, any- thing larger is to bé landed, the time will be much long- er. * i We are a bit wary about accepting the theories of the speculative scientists who are almost raedy to make plans for the first expedi- tion. It will be easy enough to shoot at the moon, but it will be another matter to reach the moon and make a return journey to the earth.! |; shall be void. popular P jar IN FoR NROE FLORIDA. i ‘PROBATE.
