LITTLESBOMBS:TO BEAT. BIG ONES With all the experts tell-| ing. us about the destructive-| paign slanted toward the] ter in ness of the atom bomb and many’ of them warning that there is no, defense, we called ‘in our ‘Scientific’ ex- pert for the ‘purpose of se- curing, if possible, some means by which disaster} may be averted in the event! that a rough-and-tough en-} emy attempts to drop bombs on this country. The sober-minded riamabak of our staff went to work immediately. After many weeks of mental effort he now reports that the proper defense against the atomic bomb.is not, as others as- sertz the simple process of drepping them on the en- emyis.country first. He says) 6 that big atomic bombs can | paign designed | the right sort of people to | Key West. All civic organi- be thwarted by little atomic DOHIDS.,.61) "His. plan’ seems fairly simple-.Enemy. planes, . fly- ing toward this country, -with atomic bombs, will be apprehtnded'by radar ‘while tar away. A range-finding device will give long-range gunners accurate data, en- abling them to fire an atomic-propelled bullet, which itself will be a minia- ture atomic bomb. These will hit the enemy planes, causing’ premature explosion of the bomb loads and save the U.S. Pausing, after explaining his simple solution, the ex- pert asked us, modestly, “Why hasn’t somebody thought of this before?” We sible, that we did not know. There is little use to argue with one who knows more than you do and none at all with to argue somebody who knows. Reading i is done very hur- riedly in this day and age, and so readers of The Citi- zen often are confused by}. the “10 Years Ago” column. This writer has tripped him- self several times, in glanc- ing over the columns, It is excusable carelessness, but don’t forget for “even the worthy Homer sometimes eas.” Sisal a a Es en ne ee teen er ant ig EEN A Ws anes mA NOW IS THE TIME 2 i aah ee enn eel Will the old-timers of NOTICE OF INTENTION TO MAKE Key West wake up some morning to find that smart Yankee capital has seized this island and is hell bent} on cashing in on its won- derous climate, fishing, and no abt beautiful scenecry? We are not dreaming when we tell you that one of these - | days, and before very long, Key West is going to be “‘dis- covered” in a big way, Neither are we dreaming when we tell you that mam- moth hotels similar to the Towers in Miami and the Traymore in Atlantic City, are going to spring up along these shores, and that where hundreds visit here today, thousands will come tomor- row. As the only frost-free piece of soil in the United States, as the only Island Eden where sea breezes blow constantly through ptetty palms and flowering trees, Key West cannot es- cape her destiny of becom- ing, in time, perhaps the most attractive and popular winter resort: on the North American Continent. But why wait for Yankee capital, or any other outside capital, to come here and skim the cream from this potential gold mine? Key West can preserve her dig- nity, her pieturesqueness, and her God-given beauty while, at the same time, making all the money she needs to make from tourists, provided—and we say pro- vided _ advisedly—the _ citi- zens who now live here take matters into their hands and begin the advancement of a program toward this end. One of the things that |needs most to be started | right now is a restrained, dignified advertising cam- to attract zations in the ‘city that lay claim to having the slight- est interest in the future of Key: West should band to- gether for this purpose, and they should proceed in a business-like ‘way to formu- late an advertising cam- eyes of eager tourists. Committees are often cumbersome, hesitant, dila- tory. Let the combined civic groups appoint one man—anh experienced, capable adver- tising executive—and give him free reign to put Key West before the public in any way that he thinks best. The Citizen has heard a lot of talk along this line recently, but so far nothing has been done. It seems to us that the Jaycees were going to do something about it, and the Overseas Road and Toll Bridge District, but recently there has been nothing but an abundance of silence on the subject com- ing from all directions, As The Citizen suggested in these columns not long ago, a good first step in the right direction would be. to get together an attractive folder on Key West—Key West, mind you, not the Overseas Highway — and see that it has adequate dis- tribution in the Union Sta- tion at Jacksonville, and in the leading hotels at Miami and elsewhere. After this first step is taken the rest may not be so difficult. Very few people willingly try to do work that some) one else should do. A free press is worthless | unless journalists worship the truth, even in the report-| ing of incidental matters. Russia has definitely come to the conclusion that | communism and capitalism cannot survive in the same} world, but Russia may be} wrong as either may keep! the other from overlording | the world. Because of its to-| talitarianism Russia has the | harder roe to hoe, If there | were only one pelitical party | in the United States it would become necessary to create another, if for ne other rea-| son than to keep the en- trenched party in check.
