U.S. FIGHTER: PLANES RACING:ACROSS COUNTRY IN REVIVAL OF BENDIX RACES EXPECT PLANES WILL* : MAKE 400 MILES AN HOUR COMPARED WITH 282 SEVEN YEARS AGO (By Associated Press) CLEVELAND, Aug. 30. Twenty-two United States fight- er planes, stripped of guns and all other fighting equipment, are racing across country today from Los Angeles to this city to try to establish records in the revival of the National Bendix Cham- pionship races. The planes are leaving Los Angeles every five minutes, and the pilots of all of them said they expected to make the flight in five hours. The distance is 2,045 miles, and should the pilots succeed in attaining their esti- mate of the time it will require for them to make the flight, the speed will be slightly more than 400 miles an hour. This is the first time the Ben- dix has been held in seven years In 1939, the winner set a record of 262 miles an hour, Eight More Vets To Join American Legion The following applications for membership in Arthur Sawyer Post No. 28, American Legion, were approved Wednesday eve- ning: Paul Gartenmayer, John E.| Pickens, Jr., Neil C. New Plan Will Give City More Police Protecti ‘ Director of Public Safety Roy ®- Hamlin has devised a plan which will give the public more police protection. The gist of the pro- cedure is that policemen on beats will call up every hour from a designated place. The place will be known only to the police de- partment, for it would be easy for a criminal who knew where a police officer was td’ be at a certain time, to commit a crime jin the portion of the “beat” from which the policeman was tem- porarily absent. To Check Officers Should a policeman play the be at certain places at specified times, but make all from one or two places, it would an easy matter to ¢heck this by an undivulged method devised by the public safety director. Hamlin doesn't expect any trouble on this score and with Chief of Police Bienvenido Perez, plans the installation of the system as soon as all de- tails have been worked out. No Added Personnel This system will give the city more protection without adding any more personnel, and it will mean a more even distribution of police protection over all por- tions of a policeman’s beat. Un-|° der the old system, a policeman eduld linger as long as he wished of his eight-hour shift at any one place. Now, it will be different, as each policeman will have ‘to make a call at a particular time ata specified place, and must walk the distance between the places where his calls are to be made. , Not Making Hardships “l am not trying to place hardships on’ the force,” said Hamlin, “but I want to give the public the police protection for which they are paying.” The desk officer taking in the calls will have “before hint a daily call box ‘report and will check off each call on‘ this sheet when made by the policeman. ‘Two Divorce Cases \ Filed Yesterday | “Two suits for divorce were filed yesterday afternoon in the coun- (ty clerk’s office. In view of the muddled political situation in Key West and the fine contribution which Mr. Louis Carbonell has made to Key West in his devoted efforts to matters not only falling within interests which will benefit us from sources other than locally, I am withdrawing from the race as a can- didate for City Commissioner and ask your wholehearted sup- port and cooperation for Mr. Carbonell. I firmly believe that he has demonstrated his ability to fight for the interests of the Community locally and at large. Also, in view of the fact that with wholehearted cooperation the results of the election will be more in line with those changes and interests we are struggling for so hard, I sincerely request that all of you who have offered your support, fo continue this endeavor to Mr. Carbonell, as his interests are same as those you and I have—the welfare and advancement of the future of Key West.
