* Precautions Against Polio By J. HARMAN BRODOWSKI ’ (EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the third of a series of articles on the scientific against polio.) Summer months are considered the most favorable time to re- move children’s tonsils and ade- noids. However, the National Foundation for Infantile Paraly- sis in its list of precautions against. polio advises, “If possible, avoid tonsil .and.. adenoids. operations during epidemics.” Why?. Seientific studies in, recent yeaxs!/of .cases of infantile :pa- ralysis among children Have re- aa the.. startling t: that erious, even fatal attacks of the disease have followed ton- sil andradenoid operations. The most dramatic of “these studies took plaee in Akron, 0.,| in 1941, when infantile paralysis | suddenly struck a family, attack- H ing five ‘of the six children and killing three of them. Dr. Thomas Francis, Jr., of the John A. Toomey of Western Re- serve. University. spent months tracking down the numerous clues. Hundreds of specimens of blood, stool, milk, water, flies and even dust were collected and sent to laboratories for exhaustive tests. More than fifty of the | ‘amily’s friends and relatives! with whom their children had: been in contact were questioned | @pd examined. | By piecing together bits of, cir- | cumstantial evidence and the re- sults of laboratory tests, Drs. | Francis and Toomey finally were | able to reconstruct the strange tragedy at Akron. Of the twenty children cared for by the institution, there were five cases of polio, one of which ended fatally. Dr. Kramer, A. G Gilliam of the United States {Public Health Service and Dr, J. G. Molner of the Detroit De- partment of Health, reported that | three of the five polio cases, : in- eluding the fatal one, occurred in children whose tonsils had re- cently been removed. ~Experimentally in the labora- torias, Drs. Albert B. Sabin and Robert Ward of the University of ; Cincinnati showed that severe fatal attacks of infantile paraly- sis can be induced in monkeys by: injecting or rubbing live virus into the animal’s tonsils.
