#AGE FOUR * Da A a i i a in i nn in i lin nin bn lin Olin ind NAVY NEWS BRIEFS By J. HARMAN BRODOWSKL Civilian Publicity Director PAABAAAADAAAAASAABASAABASAABAAABAAAMA These Notes Will Guide You On “Rainy” Days In any government establish- ment, two types of absences from work are recognized, unauthor- ized and authorized. Any em- ployee who fails to report for work and does not notify his shop er office within two hours after the beginning of the shift is eounted as being on unauthorized @bsence. Authorized absence may be taken in several ways; by an- nual leave, court leave, military leave, and sick leave. Annual leave is accrued at the rate of 2-1/6 days per month for permanent employees and at the rate of 2% days for temporary employees. It may be accumulat- ed up to 90 days although it is desirable that each employee keep it down to 60 days when- | @ver possible. Reasons for which it may be granted are for vaca-|! tion, personal business, local and religious holidays, lack of work, . or to avoid forfeiture of annual leave through accumulation of, or death, a lump sum payment of ; more than 90 days. If an employee is separated from government service be- puse of reduction in force, re- tirement or death. a lump sum payment of the annual leave due him is made. Court leave is leave granted to base pay. However, a worker cannot be paid both compensa- tion and sick leave pay. Any employee who is absent from his job for seven calendar days or longer due to non-occu- pational illnesses and employees whose absence was the result of heart trouble or a contagious dis- ease, regardless of the length of absence, must report to the Dis- pensary before being allowed to go back to work. . Dirty Work Pays Extra Compensation Employees of the Submarine Base who work on certain types of jobs classified as “dirty wor?” receive extra compensation of $.06 an hour above the regular salary paid for the performance of the rated job. A list of the work on which extra compensation is paid is available at shop offices. On ships, regardless of their location, extra pay is received by em- ployees who work in spaces in which there is oil, dirty water or oily refuse, or any material which will subject clothing to un- usual damage or soiling. This in- cludes such spaces as fuel oil, ballast, and gasoline storage tanks, confined spaces such as double bottoms and bilges,.or any other spaces which contain ex- cessive dirt, dust, or fumes caus- ‘ Additional money is paid to permanent employees who mel by work in the enclosure. called for court or jury duty. The receives his regular men spraying paint in interior compensation during the period|compartments and for, spraying of time he is under the jurisdic- tion of the court. * Military leave is granted to who are members of the National Guard Reserve onti| ters. Corps (Army), Naval or Ma- rine Corps Reserve, or Coast Guard Reserve. These employees receive full compensation during periods of training duty. Sick leave accrues at the rate vot 1% days per month and also @ecumulates up to 90 days. An employee may be granted this leave for any one of the follow- ing reasons: inability to perform duty because of sickness, injury, structural shapes and plates fol- lowing their pickling. For employees working on shore, in addition to the extra| ‘compensation for paint spraying of pickled structural shapes and plates, more money is received by men working continuously with strong solutions which are injur- ious to the body and clothing, as in pickling and cleaning work. Employees other than sandblas- ters, who are paid according to their ratings as sandblasters, and who must temporarily engage in the sandblasting and grit blasting of plates and shapes preparatory or for medical, dental, or optical.|to erection also get the extra examination or treatment; or be- cause the immediate family is afflicted with a contagious ‘dis- @ase and requires the care and at- tendance of the employee; or be- @e@use exposure to a contagious disease would jeopardize the bealth of his fellow workers. An employee who is: absent from work because of sickness should report to his shop or office within two hours after. the be- @inning of his shift. Upon ‘his return to work, if his illness: is not substantiated by a doctor; he should submit a sick leave form to his supervisor within two days. hag is substantiated by a doctor, should submit it within 15 @ays, Any appeal from denial of tick leave must be filed within 15 days after receipt of disap- proval and must be addressed to the Industrial Relations Officer via the Shop Master or Senior Civilian Supervisor. An employee who becomes ill during a period of annual leave ean convert part of the leave to sick leave only if he has been ill more than five days during the leave. Those veterans of World War II who were previously employed @8 permanent civil service ap- pointees and have returned to a government esiablishment are entitled to recrediting of all un- sed sick leave. However, this lege does not apply to War ‘ee or Temporary Appointees. Veterans who require medical examination or treatment are also given sick leave provided they give prior notice of absence. Advance sick leave is granted to’ permanent employees in some eases in which a person is ser- jousiy ill or disabled. Th case of accident within the shipyard, employees may choose between taking compensation or sick leave. Supervisors notify those under their supervision who are involved in any industrial ac- cident of their rights and privi- leges.
