Eken, who was one of the builders of the tallest structure of them all, isn’t worried about what the Air Age may do to the skyscraper. He is equally sure there isn’t going to be another race to see how high is up. “There will be high buildjngs built in the futurfe,” he says, “but they will be 35 to 50 stories in height”—-which isn’t half that of the 102-story Empire State build- ing. “There is no limit to the height, so far as stresses are con- | cerned,” Eken adds, “but the limit is on the amount of space |for necessary equipment. I don’t | think there will be many as high as the Empire unless built for such a special reason as a monu- ment or for advertising.” Eken was highly gratified at the way the Empire proved to | the man-in-the-street that planes couldn’t knock over tall #uild- ings. When an Army bomber | erashed imto the tower last sum- mer, investigators found the strueture had not been weakened in the slightest. A lot of the skyscrapers’ rugged- ness against assault is inherent in its design which is like a bird- cage of interlocking reds and bars. The birdcage allows for dis- tribution of a load of a half mil- lion toms, which is the approxi- mate weight of the Empire State building. Czech Official Praises Trade Pact With USSR PRAGUE, — (AP) — Czecho- slovakia, in the words of Foreign Trade Minister Hubert Ripka, is “more than satisfied” with its new trade agreement with the Soviet Union. The treaty offers Czechoslova- kia an outlet for exporting varied products in conjunction with the latest Soviet five-year plan, he said. These include products of heavy and machine industries. Czechoslovak National Bank representatives have announced that in the exchange of products, goods named in the agreement on mutual deliveries will be paid for by clearing, extraordinary deliv- eries by foreign exchange.
