Navy and the Shinsei women’s society of Yokosuka are combin- ing forces to battle food short- ages. The Navy is supplying sur- plus and surveyed foods and the women are rationing it to the townspeople. Candy, nuts, flour and edible waste foods which the Navy re- jected for its own use are being trucked by the Navy to stores | already acquired by the women. The president of the Shinsei society early last month ap- proached Navy Base Commander Capt. B. W. Decker of Washing- ton, D. C., with a proposal for education in democracy of the society’s 12,000 women members. Decker agreed to their plan and sent six truck loads of rejected Navy food which the women dis- tributed satisfactorily. The cooperation has one no- ticeable effect — membership in the Shinsei society has leaped to 40,000. The neighbors don’t pay much attention to the quints, whose birth was kept secret for eight months. Only on Sundays do peo- ple stop to look at the children playing in their garden, and Dili- genti says they are people from outside the neighborhood.
