S. Su- preme Court, expresses a ‘view that some “public or semi-pablic sources of en- lightenment” have departed from Thomas Jefferson’s in- junction of “eternal. hostil- ity against.,.every, form of; tyranny over the mind of man,” y The Justice points out} that education is not suffi-j cient to make Democracy workable and says that sources of enlightenment must be “governed ‘alone by that sincere regard for} truth” that will make it an} aid to the general welfare, | rather than that of some | “special interest.” We are quite agreed with ~wthe-statements of the emi- no jurist and with his con- + ” there is evidence that the'press, ‘with notable | exceptions," might be de- parting ‘ffém; the Jefferson- ian stahdard: Moreover, he ids, the; radio “is so;much} levoted to advertising and succeeded by Patrolman: 4A shger entertainment,” | rity gloe: t pe if of | wee ; errr po He! a oli ethat someyin-| ng Of elacation have fal tommeasure up tothe | *y. r kk of the general wel- | “fate: * i The Justicé made his, comments in connection with a commencement program) and, while his words are not to be taken as a condemnas tion of the press as a whole, | or the radio, or our educa-} tional institutions, it is im-! portant that the people of} this country understand the possible service that these groups can’ render to the government and the people! Spottswood, of radio station WKWF, con- cludes a letter to the county commission by requesting to be informed of the “extent; tess requestea of your support, financial and otherw: The Citizen, is unaware of the type of “law enforce- ment agencies” Mr. Spotts- wood has in mind, but The f00| Citizen does know that, be-|to the ®l sides the shériff and his deputies, Monroe county so has three constable: Further, the State Road Pa- trol cooperates efficiently with the sheriff's depart- ment. That efficiency has been so outstanding that, a few months ago when State Road Patrolman “Slim Walker was transferred from this area, we published an editorial, commending him for his success in oper- ating independently and al- so in cooperation with the sheriff's department. Every law violator who tried to escape from Mon- roe county was apprehend- ed by Mr. Walker, provided the offense had been report- ed to the sheriff's office in time. The only. fugitives who escaped were those whose crimes had nat been reported till the. fugitives had had time to get out of the country. Sheriff. Sawyer, repeat- edly in The Citizen, asked} residents to let him know! immediately when a crime had been committed. When- ever that was done, and it was thought the criminal was trying to escape from the country, Sheriff Sawyer immediately - communicated with the road patrolmap at Marathon, and a few min- utes later headquarters in Miami broadcast particulars about the criminal, and all road patrolmen in south Florida were on tiptoe to catch the criminal. And they always did, if the time ele- ment were not against them. Patrolman Walker was hat} Bateman, who has demon-jof applicants f strated, time and again, that he performs his duties ef- ficiently. So why organize “Monroe county law enforcement agencies, sheriffs dept. ete.2” Why “support . FINAN- CIALLY. and otherwise?” The Lanne rere already 4re FINANC ing the “sheriff's dept., ete.” so why duplicate, re- gardless whom the duplica- tion benefits, the FINAN- CIAL support? ; The county is experienc- ing lush times financially now,’ but anybody who reads The, Citizen's Ten Years Ago column knows it was something of an event when the’ county clerk re- ported that he had made up a payroll. County employes waited for months some- times before they received their salaries. That condition has come and gone and come again, and it will continue to come and go. The county commis-. sioners are aware of that fact. They are aware too that every dollar of the tax- payers’ money they spend unnecessarily, they are throwing away the taxpay- ers’ money. Finally, they know they would be violating | their oath of office if they sub-/ sidized any private enter- | prise, whether it is a radio | station, a newspaper or any- thing else. We learn by doing and being done. Give some officials an inch and soon they want to become rulers. Earn your money before you spend it, and then save a little for the inevitable rainy day.
