PLAYS A LONE BANG pffuirs of the. world “thie |fidace of in Paris but there is dication that Soviet is ready to‘abandon me of unilateral ac: = wherever Soviet troops abou! a‘ the veto to stop any tat i ction where Seviet. influence is not in the ascendancy. The Russians are prob- ably encouraged in their strong-handed game by the apparent unwillingness of the Congress of the United States to, maintain any); semblance of a_ capable! armed force. When the) Kremlin hears the govern-| ment talking about prin- ciples, as. applied , to the peace settlements of Europe, ‘it naturally. avonders how) far the United States’ will go, if neééssary,) ‘toi desert » and; defegd,,the proclama; tions of the government. The rapid. withdrawal of} most of our armed forces in| Earope was the tip-off to Mos@ow sithat: thes wayqwwas | open for the attainment of| Russian objectives in, East- ern Birdpe. The role hiont ed by Russia since that time se. has abundantly demonstrat,| 9 eda complete faith in the ability of the Red army to take care of that part of the} world. : Now, as the peace dis- | cussions proceed toward: the Adriatic, North Africa and Austria the Commun-| ists are thoroughly con-| vineed that the United} States of America is unwill- ing to ecompel- young men; of 18° and 19 to serve in the | army, even in peace, or to sét up a military program that will provide the| trained men that would be nevessary:in the event ‘of any ¢lasl of interests with any major power. STATE PAYS $115,000 eee f The State of New. York, through its Court of Claims, has awarded $115,000 to} Betram M. Campbell as compensation for his erro- neous conviction for a crime committed by: another man. Campbell served forty-one months, of a ten-year term, in Sing Sing, but was re- leased when a professional bogus-check writer confess- ed he was the forger. The Court awarded Campbell $40,000 for lost earnings and betause he was “clearly en- titled to | substafitial addi- tional damages” added $75,- 000. The @ase of this man merely emphasizes the pos-| sibility ofjan innogent man’s going to. prison -for a erime he did not commit. It should tend to bring into disfavor the efforts of public prose- cutors to run up a high per- centage of convictions. Don't just be good; be good for something. The grandchildren of boys and girls who used to ask for a dime now ask for a car. Is this the cause of present-day teen-age delin- quency? ‘vertise, | | Dutcher, fi pméd us he lost ley to be used in helping | tion-wide circulation. . NO SUBSIDY FOR PRIVATE ENTERPRISE WKWF, the. broadcasting John M. Spottswood, of $2,400 for advertising” through the station. Before the radio was in} vented, The Citizen assuih- city or ‘county wished to ad- tise, the advertising should, be. done in summer in newspapers or magazines Miami papers. * Phd Citizen} despite’ its t-df+town ‘circulation, has Iie asked ‘ for ‘advertise- county because it realized that the “advertising” would be nothing more than a sub- sidy.-And that’s all it would be in the case of the local radio station. : Why subsidize any pri- vate enterprise, whether the radio station, The Citizen, Thompson Enterprises, which has by far the largest private payroll in Key West; a department store, a groc- ery, or.a drug store? Let ‘us’ assume that the net earnings of the ‘0 ount staf ithete * $1 p Dota Fe ¢: Would | Spottswoo give any! part it to the city’s or county's taxpaying fund? Of course, he would not, and he would be right in not giving it, be- cause his station is a private enterprise. But, it may be objected, it costs a great deal of mon- ey to conduct a radio sta- tion. True, it costs a great deal to conduct a newspa- per. Anybody who doubts that statement may ask any of several Key Westers; who have lost thousands of | dollars in publishing local ewspapers. The Citizen lost $17,000 the year the Morning Call was published in Key West, and one man alone; Bs He with the” Call, ‘informed ‘as that the:last$125,000,in, the venture. Frank W. What “ad-| yertising?”” Advertising Key West'to Key Westers? _ The Federal Communica- tions Commission has as- signed a radius of 20 miles to WKWF, but we have been informed it can be heard in fair volume 65 miles away. But let us as- sume that it can be heard 6,500 miles from Key West. Would that be justification forthe courity commission ers to give this private en- terprise $2,400,a year? Miami has four radio sta-| tions that give much\ pub- licity. to the city, but they | don’t ask for subsidies from either the city or the coun- ty. And what is true of Mi- ami and Dade is also true of all other cities and coun- ties in the country, with the exception of Key West, which gives Mr. Spottswood $1,200 annually. Granted a radio station gives a city publicity, doesn’t the home newspaper also give its city publicity? Many times writers have made researches through The Citigen’s files to write | articles’ about Key West, and some of them were pub- lished in ta@azines of na- rope pingio eee The Citizen never asked for'a penny in giving that service to advertise Key West. Fact is, The Citizen has made researches for writers, who said they were unable to come here, and sent them the data, so that publicity would be given Key West. i The crux of the question is this: NO PRIVATE ENTER- PRISE SHOULD BE SUBSI- DIZED WITH TAXPAY- ERS’ MONEY. station in Key West; is a!, Except Sunday, by} ” rSfetees ant ie iiding Streets vit ake identified : coming this by watchfulness and r = ** lelever manipulation of o; ‘tun inothe;east and in winter in jity. sghhaiee CAMP BLANDING CHOSEN STARKS, July 6—(FNS)— Camp Blahding has been tenta- ments from the city of the}tively séletted as. one of six|’ southeastern army posts to serve for the training of reserve’ com ponents, the headquarters has announced.
