In the first place the material that goes into the pipe is very im- portant. A man may prefer a clay pipe, or he may be a corn-cob smoking man like General Mac- Arthur. Pipes have been made from stone, soapstone, cherry wood, agate, birds’ legs, animals’ bones, silver, copper and tin. So, don't be surprised if Dad has some unusual preference. Though if he’s smoking a very unusual’ pipe, the chances are he has made! it himself or found it in an oF) tique shop. Popular present day pipes are meerschaum, calabash and briar. Of all pipe materials, briar seems to be the most pop- ular now. Though good-looking pipes may be found in the cheaper brackets, the most pop- ular pipes, according to a sur- vey of Harvard, Yale and Princeton college students, are those costing $3.50 or more. The price of the pipe is de- termined by the age of briar burl | * used. L briar burls with as much as ) years’ growth are naturally very scarce and desir- able.
