Two days ago The! Citizen published an Asso-! ciated Press dispatch from| London, in which it was had discovered germs whose life-taking powers were so great two ounces of them,: if proper; distributed, | uld wipe out human life hroughout the world. The London Express was the most eredulous of the newspapers in the British capital. It believed, at least by implication, that the story about the germs was true. Several prominent Amer- jean bacteriologists have declared recently that stor- ies about wholesale destruc- tion of human life by spreading germs on popu- lation centers are far-fetch- ed, and one __ bacteriologist asserted that a great deal of hokum is mixed up with the supposed death - dealing power of germs. All bacteriologists admit that epidemics or pandem- ies probably could be caus- ed by germs, but added that counter measures could be | taken to counteract the death-dealing effect of the germs. For instance, who knows whether DDT could or could not destroy those germs about which London papers published long stories on Wednesday? Germs can kill but can be killed also. It is a simi-} lar story with all new weap-| | ons that have been devel-! oped since the beginning} | of war in recorded history: | | counter measures always) | have been invented to off-| | set much of the effect of the! | new and terrible weapon, at least terrible when it | was first used. | And so: on goes.the hys-} teria. Probably it will con- ‘tinue for another year or} ttwo., At least that will be| the case if it keeps in line| with other postwar hysteria. | VICTIMS OF WAR boat load of Another men, women and have arrived on our wel- come shores They are people of many nationalities and every religious faith, | seeking freedom from the lands of the oppressed. America is proud to wel- come today’s newcomers— tomorrow’s citizens. | OUR REAL STRENGTH President Truman, _ talk- ing to educators recently, expressed the fear that ‘we are too much concerned} with material things to re-| member that our real, strength lies in spiritual val-| ues.” There is no disposition whatever to deny the truth of the statement made by the Chief Executive, but } fone should clearly under- stand that “spiritual valu- es” must be expressed in a material world and, there- fore, find themselves thru “material things.” i Human beings live in a} material world and while| they must always appreci-| ate spiritual values, it i questionable whether such} values are real unless ex- pressed by physical beings jin a physical world. t ;|SOUTHERN BELL TELEPHONE); children! + | Apply at The Citizen Office {Sloan Hotel, there is every reason why! t do Reguler Advertisements under this head will be inserted in The Citizen at the rate of 2c a word for each insertion, but the minimum charge for the first 15 words or less is 30c, Black Face Type The rate for blackface type HELP WANTED IF IT’S e GOOD STARTING PAY YOU WANT... | Girls Joining Us to Trainas | i i Telephone Operators Reecive | | Hl $25 A WEEK | About $108 a month from ‘the| Very First Day.
