PRAISES FIRE ADVICE Editor, The Citizen: I wish to publicly thank the unidentified man who made a suggestion to the fire chief and insisted that it be carried out. The suggestion was to keep the water tanks cooled off, along- side of the gasoline tanks, thus keeping the gasoline tanks from exploding and catching fire. I have my home, thanks to this man. I’m writing this while the fire is still burning at the Over- seas Transportation Co. If we had men of this type on our fire force, I, for one, believe it would be a safer Key West. MRS. KATIE SANDS. Key West, Fla. April 24, 1946. SCOUTS THANK PUBLIC Editor, The Citizen: Please aliow me space in your paper to publicly thank those people who made possible the Easter egg hunt given by Troop 5 Girl Scouts for the children of Key West. Special thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. Neil Saunders, Mr. Hender- son, Miss Wahneta Burt, direc- tors of Jackson Square USO; Elease Williams, cook at USO; S. A. Odom, and all others who con- tributed, either money or time, toward making the hunt a grand success. Sincerely, MRS. LEE THOMPSON, Leader, Troop 5, Girl Scouts. 1205 Virginia St., Key West, Fla., April 23, 1946. “DO WE NEED THE SABBATH?” Editor, The Citizen: Not very long ago I was told directly by a member for the! State Beverage Department that the’ State Commission does not . have one iota of authority to! regulate the distance of bars from} w churches. I asked him directly] when and where the matter at’ should be handled. He replied and there was a minister of the| } gospel present and I quote him: “That is a matter entirely with- in the jurisdiction of your local administration.” It is foolish to write to Talla- hassee when redress can be ob- tained only lotally, If the people who do not care how close bar can be loeated to charches were faced with a law'that all churches were to be closed on Sunday and that gambling and saloons were ,to be wide open - what would happen? I recall the words of a prominent merchant who tried to give me some friendly advice i “Don’t you know it is foolish to oppose such interests as a big percentage of the families here depend directly on evidently as gambling and the liquor busi- ness.” I believe there is more truth than fiction in that. We have nothing to fear from the smal) time operator but then it looks like organizations muscle in there is time to stop and think. We have always ac- cepted gambling as a part of Key West but it has kept its distance from the churches and satisfied] wora with its own apostles. It will not be long that with the ferry serv- ice the travelling public can ride over to Cuba and guzzle and gamble to its hearts content at a cheaper rate. If you or I decide we want a beer on Sunday lets not keep the guy who wants to rest or worship in his church on Sunday with a jazz band that doesn’t care how loud it plays. I say let those who wish to observe the Sabbath be permitted to do so and those who do not in the name of Heaven make a nuisance of themselves to everybody else. ALBERT G, ROBERTS.
