A Navy boat found his body | Brothers have moved to Toppino | near | dinance which has been held up BARRACUDA SLAUGHTER Still hammering away at con- servation among Key West char-} ter boatmen, we have reported | to us by Assistant State Attorney William V. Albury that the Gulf} Docks were littered with scores of barracuda yesterday! If you} will recall Mr. Albury in 1929} while representative in the state legislature passed the Stone Crab and Crawfish conservation laws for this county. At the time folks here laughed at his over zealous- ness. It has come to pass that crawfish and stone crabs are now very scarce in these waters. There is a season strictly ob- served on them. This question of bringing in barracuda can be- come a serious one. Anyone can} tell you that if barracuda are, caught and killed year atfer year | around the reefs that eventually; a very sporting fish will be rout- ed from the reefs around Key; West. The sporting thing to do with reef fish is to rlease them.| Reef fish can soon be fished out. The floting fish such as the king-; fish and mackerel will not be decimated by the amount charter boatmen take every year on spoon and feather. But barracuda and other eef and bottom fish can quickly be played out if ifshed for too heavily. Sports- men catch your barracuda, bring him into the boat, flip the hook out of his mouth and push him overboard again: to live and fight another day. e e ANOTHER SKIFF DROWNING | Comes through today sad news about the drowning of Judge Roger Watkins in an attempt to swim ashore after a skiff in which he and two others were fishing had overturned, The boat was between the old and new Boca Chica bridges. When it cap- sized, Judge Watkins attempted to swim ashore and was last seen going down just at dark. Another | in the boat was J. Frank Rob: | who in 1908 capsized in a skiff: with Sam Harris. Immediately! the two unstepped the mast and} leg of mutton sail and cast it adrift. Then the two men hung! ed with their feet until they} on the stern of the boat and kick- brought the skiff to shore on a bank in the inner harbor, after; which they found the sail, right-| ed the boat and sailed her in. Every few years or so there is a death from drowning in Key West waters. It usually occurs from a skiff. A good rule is nev- er leave your skiff if you over-! turn unless you are unusually} close to shore. In this case Frank Roberts swam ashore but Judge! Watkins was not able to make! this morning around 8:30. . . | NOTES ON QUESTION Here are answers to questions } on notes found on my desk. There is a bal- ance of $15,245.22. Breakdown yrevealed original appropriation of $23,800 for maintenance of roads and employees salaries, $4,000 in a contingent fund for roads and $3,000 in another road fund. Thus far $15,554.78 has been spent in all funds leaving a balance as stated, e ° PORTER WORKS FOR FIELD Mr. Porter has sent a telegram Boca Chica Airfield in which he points out that he has been apprized of a movement to cur- tail Boca Chica and placing it back on a caretaker status. He said it was “one of the finest airports in the world” and that} , there were a greater number of flying hours here than at any other airport in .America. “He pointed out that thene were major shops and warehouses here. Mr. Porter pointed: out that the station has a 360 degree radar control, only one in the United States which takes in all] points of the compass. It is dis- tant only five miles from Key West with constant breezes mak~ g living comfortable. Between 25 and 30 million dollars have been expended here, Mr. Porter said. Concerning flying hours, Mr. Porter said that he had been advised that the percentage here is around 95% where in New England states for instance it is only 20%. Senator Andrews re- plied that he was interested inj preserving Boca Chica Field and| would look into the matter. The Weather Key West, Fla.
