Arnold, manager of Florida Motor Lines, and William Brady,! manager of Key West Gas Com- pany. | The second application is from Harold Laubscher, formerly con- nected with Mhe Chamber of Commerce, a hotel man, and 35 years of age. | Probably at first Mr. Spotts- wood ma} e no salary since the present finances of the Cham- ber are said to be low. S. C. Singleton, retiring secretary, will receive a pension of three quar- ters y. } Mr. Spottswogd, according to many reports, will probably move one of the girls from his radio station dqgwntown to the Cham- ber of Commerce office, and will install a teletype in the Chamber direct to his radio station. ‘He ‘has stated that thus he can give Key West much publicity over ‘his radio station. Downtown Office As has been said before the wisdom of this move is very much in question. The Chamber of Commerce, of all institutions in this city, should be independent of business _affiliations. It has; been strongly criticised of late by | branching groups, such as the| Key West Hotel Men’s Asso-| ciation and the “Advertise Key: West” Council, removing their or- ganizations from the sphere of influence of the Chamber be- cause the Chamber was tending not to represent all persons in all businesses of this city, Thus by moving in this fashion it makes, of the Key West Chamber ofj Commerce, supported by busi-j ness men’s money, a “downtown office” of the Radio Station WKWYF. This is an extremely un- jsavory situation, if it develops. Regarding the argument that the radio station will give Key: | of the By L.P.A., JR. Regarding the argument thet there is no salary available at this time, and anyway the ChamBer of Commerce must function in a very limited way, then why let Mr. Singleton go. He was running a Chamber of Commerce which was limited but not so limited that it had to become a “down- town office” of a radio station. Need Full Time Man Presumably the radio station girl will become the office secre- tary upon whom will fall most duties of keeping the office running during the day. These are monies which it can be said would be wiser spent in em- ploying a male secretary of the Chamber such as Mr. Laubscher. In one case you get an office girl, in the other case you get an ex- perienced Chamber of Commerce official who during his last so- jurn with the Chamber built it up tremendously. This compari- son of experience puts the hir- ing of a girl from the radio sta- tion in a decidedly unfavorable light. and once again this smacks of “commercialisifinstead of an independent ‘Chamber ‘of Com- merce run. by ‘all businesses in this city. Finally the crux of the whole matter is if a man has his hands full with his radio station which is struggling now to keep its head above water how can he ethically devote his time to building up the Chamber of Com- merce without neglecting his other business. Certainly it will be a part time job and if it is to be just a part time job then why does not Mr. Spottswood volunteer his services free of charge, without the incentive of receiving a downtown office for his teletype and employment of one of his office girls. Mr. Laub- | scher could then be appointed secretary on a full-time basis and de the job wholeheartedly and | not just as a part-time job! 1 Back To FERA Thought Does Key West wish a Cham-' ber of Commerce run with a part time secretary with a radio sta- tion teletype installed. to aid ‘the Radio Station and with one of the office girls of the Radio Sta- tion running the Chamber ST | city of Key West”.
