AMARA BABABAAADADASADAD AABAAAADADAABE STONE CRAB HOOKING I was questioning editor Harris on his story about stone crabs. To; a youngster like myself the only stone crabs we see are those oc casionally caught in traps because they were just about extinct before my time. But. Sam says wher he went out on the American Bank just across the way from Curry’s. wharf, he used to walk for miles on the flat searching out the holes where the crabs lived. Some of these holes are four feet deep. He would in- sert a hook-shaped rod and the crab would seize a hold on it and) be pulled out. Sometimes oe crab would let go and then Sam would have to hook it up under- neath. There is no crab to com- pare with stone crab for taste. eA crawfish; commission shall be judge of its! own election subject to court re- shall hold office who has been convict-| ed of a felony or infamous crime view. No commissioner while in o1iice. e . HIGH INTEREST Interest like termites will soon There has been some criticisms of the Key West proposals which would have put back the eat up a house. Electric company for refunding of their bonds over the 30 years planned. The Overseas; Road and Toll Bridge District is} working on a plan now to reduce its interest, and comes now ‘the beach proposition which the Nu- veen Company will issue bonds on when the bonds are validated| | through the Supreme Court. You . ° BOTANICAL PROBLEM Botanical garden is getting to be a sore spot. I understand that the Sikes have every right to move what trees and plants they have been moving out of the city-! owned gardens since they were originally planted by themselves. They are moving to Sugarloaf Key to supply northern markets with seedlings such as the luxurious stephanotis blossom. The Wom- an’s Club have no one who could take over charge, although they have suggested that they may be able to supervise it if laborers are hired by the city. Chamber of Commerce: Secretary Steve Sin-| gleton hag suggested ‘that. the State Road Department také over the park and make it a/gjoadside park as they have done with plac- es on the upper keys and Over- seas Highwa Til y over and, over again, though, that the only, way to run a place right is to have a trained man employed and! getting a satisfactory salary. | e ° POLITICAL FOOTBALL One of the troubles with city-] managed affairs such as the Bo-' tanical Gardens and Aquarium is that-too often these places be- come political footballs and jobs are tossed to just anyone. haps King can stand firm on somei of these issues and see that the! right men get to the right places. The aquarium, for instance, some- times w a wonderful place and at other times was quite poorly kept up with inadequate speci- mens improperly labeled. Per- sonally I wouldn't want a job in a place which might last just two years and then I would be out on a cold, opposed political limb. Would you? This is one point where a city manager can do a lot of good. ° ° KEY WEST SCRAP BOOK There is a great deal of com- plaint over the fact that there is no literature on Key West's points of interest so that the casual visi- tor or even lengthy visitors may see all these points of interest. From time to time this column will reprint points of interest.| Suggest that you local folk clip} out these items, together with feature stories which appear in the paper about institutions of the town ard the colorful industries} of fishing and sponging, and that! you paste’them up in an ordinary scrap book. Thus if you have friends visiting you from out of town you have a wealth of ma- terial for them to examine. Cou- pled with Judge Browne's Key West, The Old and The New, you really will have some information, at your fingertips. . ° REPYBLISH HISTORY Mrs‘ Madeline Brown télls me that shortly Judge Browne's His- tory of Key West will be repub- lished since she has had a great many calls for it. e ° NO NEPOTISM Following again on our sum-| mary of Key West’s new ‘charte' City commission shall provide for} the encouragement of trade and industry by providing public fa-! cilities for the convenience and enjoyment of tourists and visitors} and aid in the advertising of Key West's climate and other attrac- tions. Under LIMITATION OF POWERS article: It shall be un-{ lawful for any commissioner i or city official of the city to contract with any relative for work unless there is public advertisement and the lowest bidder given the job.) Laborers may be related to pub-! lie officials, however. No inter- ested party bank shall be used unless same is secured as herein-! after set forth. Such bank shall furnish a surety bond. Fine for offenses of this nature is not less should see the tourists’ eyes light | up, incidentally, when the details of the beach are laid before them. e e SAVE $31,500 In the Bridge District question a proposal by the board to refund present bonds of the district may cut interest to 3 percent and per-| haps two percent, thus saving $31,500 a year. Interest is now being paid the RFC for the build- ing of the bridges and already $1,- 300,000 has been paid while only $300,000 has been paid on the principal. The RFC is a mighty fine corporation but it must ex- act heavily from its debtors. It is perhaps the only outstanding organization of WPAish days. Would that more public works monuments were erected to RFC! in this city. I am mindful.oef the horseshoe, so-called swimming pool on the north side of the Boulevard, the half-heartedly dug out Garrison Bight and no public} buildings erected. I say again my last transmission: more pub- lic buildings for tourists and | jocal folk alike. ° ° C'EST LA VIE Have received a great deal of December 24, the Christmas col- that all our columns should be written this way. I fail to see this, since life is not just all good, one must work with the dross, too, to work prime matter up to something worthwhile. Thus this column will run the gamut of Key West life from the worst to the best. C’est ta vie! We find that local folk principally like local polities and inside. news and tourists and visitors like more about the romance and color and “feature stories of the city. . e HERE'S A YARN Hilary Whalton, veteran sponge buyer in Key’ West whose build- ing is on Simonton street be- tween Greene and Caroline, was telling us that one fisherman took a party out for shell hunting and meanwhile went progging in the shoals waters with his glass-bot- tom bucket and sponge hook and brought in sponge which were sold for $75 in just a couple of hours work. It is interesting to watch Hilary clipping the dross from the yellow, grass, sheeps- wool sponges. It is said that Navy doctors found these natural spong- es invaluable during the war and far better than artificial eroneS | Today In History 1788—Israel Ludlow first set- tles in Cincinnati. 1810—Seth Boyden of Newark, N.,J. patents historic first. mach- ine -for making {'Wrought-iron nails. 1846—Iowa admitted to. state- hood—the 29th state. 1890 Battle of Wounded Knee, S. There is a concentration and whole-heartedness of spirit that will go far to offset some of the deficiencies of the character, and help in the strug- gle for success, which will be ultimately attained. 1 | decree cause of in | MORTGAGE COMPANY, a Maryland ARTHU eat CARABALLO and BALLO, her husband, are defendant 110-271, at public door County, LEGALS NOTICE OF MASTER'S SALE NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that I, as Special Master ender the final of foreclosure, as. amend heretofore entered in that certain? pending in the Circuit Court Eleventh Judicial Circuit of id for Monroe County, | wherein THE RFC the Florida, in Chancery, ration, is plaintiff, and Mac- R HOMES CORPORATION, a corporation, and ROSA M.
