A Christmas Editorial THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT The Christmas spirit is the epitore of Christian | teaching. Of course, we mean the Christmas spirit that} breathes “peace on earth, goodwill to men”. Too many of us, in Key West as well as elsewhere in the world where Christmas is observed, look only on that season of the year as a time for revelry j Some Key Westers may think that that view is more | generally entertained now here than it was in the old days, but such is not the case. Fifty or more years ago, Christmas Eve celebrations | lasted through the night, with cart, buggy and phaeton| rides, and the air resounding with cracked ringings of “whisky tenor | But, strange as it may seem, at an exceedingly low level, chiefly becaus interferred with other people, and such a thing as burglary was unusual indeed. Hundreds of homes in Key West were unlocked throughout the night. | What was the reason for that exemplary attitude of neighbor toward neighbor? It may be found in the fact that Key Westers generally were church-going people. All churches were crowded at every service, and weekly prayer meetings were well attended. For some reason that is not easily determinable, the spirit of “peace on earth, goodwill to all men’, the true Christmas spirit, was far more generally felt in the old days in Key. West than | it is today, and so, too, was that great precept, ‘“‘Do unto others as you wish to be done by” more generally observed than it is tod That was the Christmas spirit throughout the year in Key West, and it found its epitome in the Christian spirit, | abroad in the land, with some excesses in expre but withal expressed in kindness for and cons toward “the other fellow”. Central theme of the tracts is “The Meaning of Christmas.” As you propably know, the Bible makes no mention of Christmas nor does it give the date of Christ’s birth. Christmas is an invention of man’s mind. Its commercial and worldly aspects have so distorted whatever di- vine meaning man may have fintended that to many today it’s just an holiday for false or carnal pleasures. However, spiritual value of the tract: not be discounted nor t comment so intended.
