THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1945 FOV VV VV OT IV IF II VFI IV ITI ITT TTS CORAL ROCKETS By L. P. ARTMAN, JR. NMABBDALDADADADSLASASZESAAABSAASAALE CITIZEN AHEAD I was glancing over heads in The Citizen and an out-of-town) paper the other day. On Monday The Citizen ran “May Name City Manager At Commission Meet Tomorrow.” On Tuesday the story had further developed and The Citizen said, “David King Expected To Be Named City Manager Tonight.” The same di an out-of-town paper said, as ir! in answer, “Routine business; only expected at city commission} meeting tonight.” Then the next! day The Citizen carried “King Unanimously Voted Key West's! City Mana ie out-of- town paper reluctantly said “King Named City Manager of Key West.” ° ° ENDORSE RESTAURANT LIQUOR This column is going to come right out and say th \ quite necessary to a laws and permit th restaurants to serve coc! hard liquors at their table: in reference to a defeated ordi- nance at the city commission meeting Tuesday night. Now I am going to say right now that} this will put a terrific responsi-/ bility on the City Commission! and I’m hoping they hold up un-! der it. Passing this ordinance} means that a large bar like Sloppy; Joe’s could very easily be granted} a license and open up on a M tello Tower lot alongside the Casa} Marina. However, the a Ma-| rina is allowed to se liquor and I believe other large tourist restaurants should get a like priv- ilege. But believe you me, zens, the commission should t take a firm stand against all ing beach zoned area. ordinance, which may come up again, provides for 100-table res- taurants. e e GETTING CLUBHOUSE DEED Jaycees voted last work with the securing a quit c! Country Clubhouse and attempt to speed the deed. They want the Clubhouse badly for a Jaycee Community Center and wish a’ lease on the place. They will then! put the place in first-class shape. | |This column is going to endorse! jthis: project also. As a former naval recreation officer I believe; the boys.in blue ha’ enough recreation buildings as it is. Just/ whén'’I was here alone I built a beer patio at the section base alongside the recreation hal large library, postoffice, b. ball. court, baseball di: beathouse. So they h of buildings. Perhaps thi take over the Golf Cours agreeable to the Golf Club, which it Seems to be at present, becau: golf is a good recreation to the mien and the navy can keep the course in good condition and build it up where it needs building, in return for which their men get to play on the course, free or oth- erwise. to y in night . ° CRACKERJACK PLUGGER Td like to put in a plug for a crackerjack feature writer, my friend Steve Singleton. Ve y!in fr | in the Chamber to get an assist- >; write man, a younger man who :| can get around) and alse a photo-j s cleared through the Chamber to >| outside man. 1,! the Internal Improvement Fund, s; AQUARIUM MANAGER | him as to probability of taking the} few know of his services at the Chamber of Commerce, a one- man chamber of commerce. Steve} id that he would answer per-j sonally any letter written to the Chamber and he has done just} this and brought scores of visitors} and residents to Key West. ARS venture to say that he has brought! ®¢. tm ten times his salary to Key West} esh money each year. Steve has a fresh, youthful style because his mind has never become the 81 years his body has. When ou get a personal letter from Steve you instinctively want to know more about Key West. Steve is pretty good, too, in interviewing persons coming into his office to get information. I think, though, that his Chamber is badly under-{ manned. My own belief is that at least $6,000 a year is needed ant secretary (leg man and re- grapher, either on part or full time, to service the Chamber with beautiful feature shots of Key West. * ° . RAISE MONEY SOON I believe the Advertise Key} West Council will shortly initiate| a drive to raise this fund among {the business men who compose} the Council and supply Steve with this additional help.. Steve, too,| is soon going to hold ‘regular din-} ers at the Ghamber and invite} prospective members. to join in the discussion, submit suggestions, and become members of the; Chamber at $24 a year. I be-} lieve, though, that the Council should operate separate from the Chamber as an organized body} but that all its stuff should be) avoid duplication and you will find Steve will never throw a monkeywrench in any additional publicity for Key West. I be- lieve, too, the $6,000 can be easily] raised by subscription. Look for early hiring of a writer to assist Steve, to be appointed from thej Council. He will probably be an . WILSON BOND I believe Mr. Wilson should come out publicly and state if he is ready to post.a performance bond with the owners of the Gar- rison Bight property now so that more confidence can obtain for his project. It is a beautiful thing he has planned for Key West which will make much money for himself and for the city. The land is offered at $500 an acre by I understand. The city has gone on record as stating that they will issue the necessary license. e e What with the Navy going to start on repairing the city aqua- rium and Emory Lowe Pierce, biology teacher at the University of Florida and former manager of the Aquarium, coming down for the Christmas holidays from the; Unive: it might be wise for the commissioners to interview sit job. The aquarium is just about self-supporting and probably could be self-supporting if run well.
