WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER ne eesen acne FOLLOWING THROUGH By PEDRO AGUILAR LLL IEEE BASEBALL On baseball, I will try to give! you the best I can as I missed the| last three games played. From the first game played this! THURSDAY year at the Municipal Stadium to the one played on Navy Day,| I will say the best catchers have| been Izzy Rodriguez and O. Rod-| riguez—the Rodriguez clan is in| the lead. j The leading pitchers have been! Sweeting, Meador, Chas. Albury,! P. Baker and P. Carbonell. { At first base we have “Crip”) Lastres, Malgrat, J. Navarro and R. Cruz. They have played that bag well. Second base has been covered| in good style by T. Valdez, Cates, Domenech, C. Valdez, Cates, D.} Perez and A. Acevedo. On third, the best have been! M. Hernandez, Gomez, C. Albury, O. Cruz, J. Carbonell, M. Ace- vedo, O. Cruz, D. Perez. Prancing around at short we have Chas. Albury, J. Navarro, Baker, G. Valdez, J. Albury, Eloy} Acevedo. In the outfield, the best have been: Leftfield—Joe Mira, J. Garcia, P. Machin, McCoy, Aritas, Davila, Keer and Barcelo. Centerfield—R. Rueda, Baker, E. Acevedo, Zell, McCollough, R.| Thompson, Kerr, Malgrat and B. Roberts. Rightfield—“Pie Traynor”, Bus- ter Roberts, J. Aritas, Williams, Papy, C. Griffin, F. Carbonell and Sweeting. All have played well, so let’s see who will make the All-Star} team for 1945 in baseball. j ———— | NOTES OF NAVY STARS This concerns the game the) Navy All Stars played with the} Reglas in Havana at the Univer-| sity of Habana on Saturday, De- cember 15. First, Charley Gibson was not his old self im the box and Crooks | was wild. Ferguson made up for their lack but playing a bang-up game, as did Lauman. Navy got as many hits as the Cubans but couldn’t mix them at the right moments. The impression is that the Navy All Stars of Navy Day game here could have won over the Cuban amateur champs and some day will prove it. DeLuca poled two safely. Rhodes played good at the mid- dle bag. Cuba outifelders were kept busy snagging flies to hold down the visitors. Rosas and Acosta were the best in the field Baez smashed a homer’ in the second with one on for the Cu- bans. NEWS AND NOTES OF THE YEAR In softball in Key West, outstanding teams of the year have been, in the City League, the Machinists with 31 won, four lost and two tied, and the B29 Bombers. Machinists won both halves of the first City League schedule the} this year and clainted the playoff} in the first} from Porter Place half and won over the Army Bar- racks and B29 Bombers in the second half that ended in Octo- ber. At present, in the winter sched- ule of the City League, the Ma- chinists are tied for first place} with the Bombers, each having} - five victories and one loss. | “Dutch” Gehring has been the manager of 'the Machinists ll through the year. Del Valle won the batting crown in regular City League} play this year and so far Parks is leading the winter league. Williams, “Pie Traynor”, Sweet- ing, Higgs and James Mira have played well behind the plate. “Sue” Griffin, J. Walker, Parks, C. Harris, Rosam and Arias have pitched great ball and those ar-| riving late, F. Villareal, Lucilo,} Buster Roberts and F. Tynes, have done their share, too. At first, Castellano, Goss, ‘Crip’} Lastres, Malgrat, Peter Valdez and Joe Mira have played the po- sition in good style. | Outstanding at second base have been Tata Valdez, Lou Gon- zalez, S. Lewis, Gutierrez, M. Lo- | | | Active or t games| | 19, 1945 CITY SPORTS Passive Recreation THE WEATHER ES ROIS ES FORECAST DIAMONDBALL at Bayview Park Field .
