WRBBAABBDDADAASADALES BOASAAABAABADED Church Food Sales Some of the most delightful experiences of my life as a boy were when my mother took me down to the grassy lawns of a Key West church where was set an immaculate white table and I peered over the top of the table at the wealth of taste and color Prepared by the ladies of the church in a food sale. There! were strawberry fudge, chocolate fudge, coconut candy, reds, pinks, . gorgeous angel food cake and pound cake and my favorite chocolate devil’s food cake with’ lare helpings of rich vanilla ice cream scooped out of home-made! by the nice, Then usually would fallow a game of wrestling or tag with some of the boys of the church and every once in a while we would peer curiously at the little girls all tidied up in colored dresses with arge bow ties and immaculately and daint- ily walking around. Just a mo- ment’s look then was enough and we were off running around the lawns. eee Convent Goosenecks Then, as a student at the “Col- lege”, which was the Catholic! High School then and a cracker-| jack it was, we were taught by nuns from the Convent of Mary Immaculate. Ever’so often we were told of a “gooseneck” which would be held at the Convent and. to which we were invited. Lined up in military fashions by classes we walked over to the Convent. Some of the littler boys were ter- rified at the large police dog which then roamed the Convent grounds and who vould come dashing up as the classes marched in. Then, of course (we were get- ting older), we would get a chance to see the Convent girls in their white and Navy blue yellow clapper or beaks at the end in which you put your nickels or dir In would pop the goose head and out: would come a at. The profits would go to church benefits, us- ually into the box for the poor and needy families. We had very, fine instruction in those days. I Sister ngelista, who deyoted their lifetime to teaching. Evén ‘in those days, Sister Louis, who was over at the Convent, was known throughout the tow for her good deeds and her friendliness to the people.., Sister Louis has at present Convent nearly fifty years, I believe. eee Two Weeks Manager’ Well, Key West will break out into a new era, probably a couple of weeks. Manager Demeritt implied at City Commission meeting Tuesday night that the new manager be hired in a couple o fweeks. Every one on the cor Ss using the words “very shortly” now so one of these bright mornings I'll be ambling over to our city hall and Mayor Demeritt will greet me with a big smile, chuckling with ood humor, as is his way, and say, “Well ,this morning there’s a new captain at the helm, City Manager ———_—— And most probably it will be David King of Michig: civil engi- neer and a fine fellow. Then, it is hoped, we will settle down to some real busness in Key: Westj We hope for the last time we wi hear those words, “Key West h great promise” and we can thel have pride in saying “Key West IS great.” J ©1800 Volunieets Calm The Volunteers of the Fire De- partment are not going to resign!
