ETS - In any discussion ‘as to the possible lemgth of the war with Japan, there is re- peated reference to the enemy’s “will to fight.” and some of the predictions as to thé length of the struggle seem to be based exclusively upon the belief that the Japan- eve will to fight will not vanish. In this connection, it is being assumed that the purpose of the bombing raids upon Japanese centers is mysteriously connected with a belief that the bombs will destroy the enemy's will to’resist. This, we think, is grroneous. The purpose of our bombing is to destroy the enemy's ability to resist. » Regardless of the Japanese will to fight, the war will be over when the means of waging war are no longer available. The bdmbing campaign against Japan will be ped up much faster than was possible inBurope. Moreover, the blockade of Jap- att will become tighter every day and will we the enemy of raw materials and lies to replace that destroyed. Togeth- etpthe bombing and blockade are reducing thg@ enemy's power to make war. ~ This does not mean, in our opinion, thet the Japanese will surrender before an inwasion. It does mean, and very positively, tht when a full-sized assault is launched, thg’ enemy will be greatly weakened in re- sogrees and hence resistance will be short- ened Obviously, our casualtids will be leasened. The lesson in Europe is that the bomb- ing of German plants and facilities did not leafen the will to fight. The destruction of plapts and the dislocation of essential ser- vites, resulting from aerial bombings, weak- ewed the power of the enemy to make ef- fettive résistance. When the Allied armies hit with full power, there was determined realtance for a while, but the Nazis were witgbie to continue the struggle although the GePman armies contained millions of fight- ing men. While it is possible that the bombing and blockade of Japan might bring about our complete victory, the chances are that an invasion of the home islands will be neeessary. The possibility also exists that this invasion will result in prolonged fight- ingand exceedingly heavy losses. Neverthe- leds, the probability is that the destruction of Japanese cities, plants and facilities will se*heavily handicap the Japanese Army that the military campaign in the Islands wilt somewhat resemble that in France and Geemany. SEIZE NAZI-HELD FARMS The Czechoslovakian government has seiged more than 270,000 farms in the pos- session of Germans, Hungarians and “trai- tof and Nazi collaborationists.” Most of th®m are in the Sudeten land where they wee occupied by Germans. JS Phere can be little argument about the justice of the decree but the fact that it méans the displacement of nearly 2,000,- 006. people gives us some idea of the com- pléx problems to be solved by postwar Europe. ——.. The human race includes a number of 200-pound men who quail before the tomgue of a 100-pound wife. KEY WEST'S RECORD: “Thar’s gold in them yonder hills,” and there’s gold, or its equivalent, in Key West, as was demonstrated by the record Key West set in the Seventh War Bond Loan drive, according to figures released Sat- urday by J. J. Trevor, chairman of the Monroe County War Bond Sales Committee. The quota of $574,000 that had been set by the Department of the Treasury for Key West was many thousands of dollars in excess of the quota in any other of the six preceding drives, and Key: West went over the top with $229,110.25 to spare. While the Citizen jis aware that many | of the purchases were made by men in the services, particularly navy personnel, yet the purchases by Key Westers were far greater than they had ever been in any other drive. Yes, there’s money in Key West, and the very best thing that could happen to the city in the postwar world would be for Key Westers who have purchased bonds to keep them as the very best security possible to have on hand when an emergency arises. Series E bonds are better than cash and are practically as liquid. It is imposs- ible for them to decrease in value, because they are not subject to market flucuations; instead, their value will continue to in- crease the longer you hold them. If a pur- chaser holds them until they mature, the | value will increase one-third of the amount invested. Hold‘on to your bonds as long as it is possible for you to do so! The knowledge that you own them is an asstifdnce against the possibility of a financial Headache. f e . More and more digest magazines are being published. It is impossible to digest them all. If the Germans knew President Tru- man well, they would consider him “Ein guter Kerl”, equivalent to the connotation of “A swell guy,” and the Latins regard the one of whom they are fond as “un buen chico.” Presumably all peoples have a tender though laconic term for those who have won their affection. POISONED VOTE BAIT The plain, unadulterated bunk that is being peddled today by so-called responsi- ble men in government to the effect that Congress must pass legislation that will provide jobs for all, is simply sickening. Congress might pass an emergency meas- ure that would employ everybody for afew months or a year or two, but neither: Con- gress nor the government has a dime to em- ploy anybody until it first takes it away from the people in taxes. If government is to furnish jobs for all continuously, it must confiscate all prop- erty and industry and go into business to earn the money to pay the public employes; it couldn’t tax people enough to provide jobs for all and leave anything for the tax- payer to conduct business with. Hitler’s Germany would be a kinder- garten compared with the tyranny that would develop in any country that provided jobs for all. Only as men and women rustle their own jobs, will they remain independent, SS 9: Service men, home from the firing line, rarely sympathize’ with Home front com- plaints. : The Constitution of Florida says to re- apportion the state every 10 years. What’s keeping the Florida legislature from doing its sworn duty? Is it so hard to do what is right? DENMARK FINANCES COMMUNISTS A news dispatch from Copenhagen, Denmark, tells us that the government has granted a loan of 750,000 kroner to the Communist Party and its press to enable the party to rebuild its organization and publications. The explanation for the unusual loan from a government ¢o a party is that the Communist Party was dissolved by German pressure during the occupation of Den- mark, and all its leaders were arrested. general election, decided that the loan was desirable to give the Communists a fair chance in the elcetion. has displayed a wisdom that is quite un- usual among the governments of the earth. Certainly, if an election were held without giving the Communist Party a chance to participate on a fair basis, there would be grounds for complaint, but, under the cir- cumstances, the Communists will have no | alibi if the election goes against them.
