VOLUME XLVI. No. 87 Service and AP Features 66 Yéars Devoted to the Associated Press Day Wire of Key West County Board Discusses Proposal For Reducing ts Voting Precincts Number Of Would Be” Reduced’ From Sixteen Dowii Td Six County commissioners last might discussed in detail a Proposal to reduce the vot- ing precincts in Monroe county from 16 to six, and} County Attorney Julius F.| Stone, Jr., was directed to inquire into the matter, par-! ticularly as to the places! where the voting booths will be located, and to make a re-| port at the next. meeting of | the board. If the precincts are’ re-; duced as proposed, holding! of elections in the county: will cost only about’ one-! third of what now is the proposal is an outgrowth of’ the purchasing of 17. voting machines by the county. A rep- resentative ‘of the company that sid the machines said, during his last visit here, that there was no further necessity of the county’s haying so many precincts when voting is done by machines. He explained that two or more pre- eimets could be merged into one polling place, and that two or mere machines could be used to take care of the voters expedi- trously . As proposed by the commission, there will be a precinct in cach ef the four commissioners’ dis- triets in Key West, and two in the fifth district. The reason for having two precincts in the fifth is beciuse of its length, which would impose a hardship on vot- ers from one end of the district to the other, if the polls were put) > on the the case upper or lower keys, as may be. To avoid that hardship, one precinct will be lo- cated at Marathon on Key Vacas, and the other on Tavernier on Key Largo. Volunteer Firemen Asked To Attend Charter Meeting Fire Chief Leroy Torres sent out a call today to the 182 volun- teer members of the Key West Fire Department, requesting them to attend the mass meeting that will be held Friday night in City Hall to discuss the proposed new city charter Chief Torres said that a copy of the proposed charter is in City Hall, and that it makes no refer- ence whatever to volunteer fire- men as an organized force. For that reason, he added, ‘he believes it is to the interest of the volunteers to be present at Friday's meeting to try to ascer- tain what their status will be in the event the proposed charter is validated by the legislature.
