TUESDAY, JUNE 22, 1943 —_——. — : FOLLOWING THROUGH ct PEDRO. AGUILAR eaaeenenennnannnammmnaemmmmmmaial BIG GAME SET FOR JULY 4TH Key West's great ballplayer and friend, William (Butch) Cates, is back after a couple of ames in Miami and .| the St. Louis Cardinals defeated | . Ce Ser the Cincinnati Reds. The score in! vamping the Pan-American nine, which team he went to the Magic Cates Carbonell” ” another boy who made good with P erican. They put pep in the ¢lub and the fans up there hated to see these boys leave, but Uncle Sam claimed then and said he needed them down here on national defense and so they had to come back. Cates now is interested in the big All-Star game to be played July 4th in the new stadium on Flagler Avenue. He is getting his boys together and with a few workouts he will be ready to meet the All-Service baseball) stars. | Cates has such players to pick’ from as: Esmond (Tarzan) Al-| bury, :to catch; Julio Barcelo, to! Play- first; Cates can cover sec. | ond; Jackie Carbonell, — third, base; Armando Acevedo, the one/ and only at short; Cyril Griffin, leftfield; Philip (Cheta) Baker, centerfield, and, one of the fol-| Jowing.in right: M. Acevedo, G. (Rubberman) Garcia Mario Her-| nandez, Castellano and_ others. , Another good combination ’ would be to have Cyril Griffin! hind the plate and Esmond} Albury cover the hot corner,| sending Carbonell to the out-| field. | Philip Baker has been tel best lead-off man in Key West for many years. He is a hard! batter to pitch to and is fast. A.| Acevedo in second place can- not be beat. He can advance a} runner and is also fast. Billi Cates would be the third man up, followed by Esmond Albury in the clean-up position. Bota are dangerous sluggers. Griffin} could be fifth. He’s old now) but is a brainy player and aj dangerous hitter in tough spots.! Julio Barcelo would be sixth and Carbonell in seventh place. The’ rightfielder would bat in the eighth spot and the pitch last. Today the only pitcher in condition is Salinero of the Pi- rates, He has been warming up the past month and claims his arm is fit as a fiddle. Robert! Bethel of the Conchs will not take long to get in shape, nor will M. Sanchez, Puby Carbonell, Joe Casa and other moundsmen now in the city. However, at present, Salinero tops them all. If these boys get together we ean have a very good club on the field, and if Mario Pena gets in shape we can have a real outfit. Then Jackie Car-| bonell, Barcelo and Baker would be the three men in the gardens. They are all ball hawks. Pena, Cates, Albury and Ace- vedo would form the infield.) » What more could we ask? Fans will remember the old days when this combination! clicked so well. Ask Miami clubs, they know. Old Man Grif-/ fin behind the plate could han- dle any pitcher. He played against service clubs in World War I at the corner of White and ler streets. when a ba was located there. And he ‘i I going “strong. The, writer believes the great- ‘est worry Cates will have will jbe material for the mound. If the out sand practice he Will have at least three good pitchers in shape for the big game—Carbdnell, Salinero and Bethel. F We hope the boys will take an interest and practice each after- noon from 5 to 7 o'clock. MICKEY UBIETA Domingo (Mickey) Ubieta, lo-| al soft and hard ball player, has just sent the writer a card) from Ft. Leonard Wood, Me., where he is stationed. Mickey says “hello” to his friends here and writes that he is having a good time and play-| ing on one of the dozen clubs at| the Fort. He claims there are several Key West boys with him| there. | ROMANCE IN REVERSE WINSTON-SALEM, **'N?" C.— There was no lost motion: in this divorce suit. The complaint, as filed in court here, alleged that the couple was separated two days before the date on which; they were married.
