June “Lady poets’ are supposed to live vague lives, subsisting on sweet words and weak tea. But at least one does not. In Smith College she suffered a breakdown which led her to her husband, somewhat indirect- ly. With a friend of hers, the Countess Alida von Krachow, she went visiting in Portland, Me., and three got a yen for sailing. The two girls saw the ship they wanted, the Frank T. Stinson. They asked the master to give them passage, and because he thought they world never get permission, he said “yes”. Seafaring Romance They caught him in Philadel- phia, and went aboard. For months they sailed, Mrs. Leitch writing a little, the countess smoking one cigar after another. _ Then there was. a storm, the ship came up for the rescue. A young man called across, was asked to stand by, but eventu- ally faded into the night. Presently the girls were in Buenos Aires. Passage to the States was not easliy come by in the ’Nineties, and when one} turned up for Rio Mrs. Leitch gave the countess her share of the passage money, and the countess promised to see to it as soon as she had finished her cigar. Penalty for non-compliance denies any un- registered business and those interested in doing such business the right to defend or maintain suit in any court in this state, either as plaintiff or defendant, and it further provides that any person violating this law regarding registration is liable to having an in- formation charging a misdemeanor filed against him by any person aggrieved by the fictitious name, and on conviction of such charge shall be liable to a fine of $25.00 or 60 days in jail, or both. 5. Before registration-can be made, such in- tention to register must be advertised at least once a week for four (4) consecutive weeks in a newspaper as defined by law in the county where the registra- tion is made. This law applies to Apartments, Hotels, Filling Stations, Cabin Courts, or business of any kind ex- cept such as are operated under the name of the owner. Lawyers generally agree that the terms “proper or called name” as used in the law would be like this example: Suppose you are one of the numerous Jones family. Suppose your proper name is “John Edward Jones,” but your called name is “J. E. JONES.” Unless your business is actually operated under one or the other of these names you would be required to register.
