NEW SERVICE LOOP FORMED; TEN TEAMS INAUGURATES SEASON SUN- DAY: OLD AMERICAN AND NATIONAL LEAGUES DIS- | CARDED i Organization of a new ten-team! baseball league which will inaug- | urate its season Sunday under the| familar name of the Island Ser- vice Men’s circuit took place at a} meeting in the NOB Recreation Office this week. The present loop composed at] the National and American di- visions has been discarded and the ten outfits. included in the new! one will all. start from scrateh: with two doubleheaders on the opening day’s slate. j . Games will be played seven days' a week thereafter until the middle of September with doubleheaders on Sundays. All contests will be Seven innings. Weekday games will start at 1800. Sundays the twin Wills will get underway at 1430. The cotingents to take part are: Goast Guard, Naval Air Station, | Naval Operating Base, Craig's| Dock, Sound School, Marines, | Hospital, Section Base, Fort Tay- lor and Boca Chica, ' The schedule will be arranged, so all the teams will alternate their playing fields. Half of their contests will take place on the NOB diamond and the other half on the Army Barracks field. Revision of the old circuit was deemed necessary with the trans- fer of two nines—the 50th Coast Artillery and the 263rd Coast Ar- tillery—and the loss of comple- ment at the Receiving Station. Consequently the play has the players of the now defunct Com- missary Store contingent being! placed on the “auction block” for selection by either the Hospital or Boca Chica terms in an endeavor to strengthen both lineups. The complete schedule will be) drawn up at a gathering of the| baseball committee and official | seorekepeers Friday night. The, committee is headed by Ensign Joseph Justice, Asheville, N. C., of the NOB Recreation Department, | as chairman; Ensign Fred Pear-| son, Wilmington, Ohio, of the | Coast Guard; Chief Alex H. Jaffee, | Flint, Mich., of Craig’s Dock Chief John C. O’Connor, Cliffside, | N. J, Sound School; ‘and Sgt.| Grady McNabb, Jacksonville, rep- } resenting Fort Taylor. This governing board will meet twice a momh to consider pre-| tests, revise schedules, etc. A review of the old league’s| play showed the Coast Guard set- | ting the pace in the American di-) vision and the Air Station leading | the National. The former won ten! and lost two. The airmen had| eight victories and a pair of de- | feats, The remainder of the Amevieast| has the NO in second place with| nine wins and two beatings; the| Sound School with a record of five |, and five; the Marines, three |, triumphs and seven losses; and Boca Chica, one win and nine de-! feats. | Craig’s Dock wound up second | in the National with seven vic- tories and five beatings. Third} was the Commissary, six wins and five losses. The Army followed with a one and one record. Next} was the Section Base with four victories'and seven defeats and bringing up the rear was the Na- val Hospital with thre triumphs} and eight beatings. | Final tabulations on the top} hitters of the American reveal Ed) Kacanowicz( Coast Guard stal-| wart, pacing the pack with a .484.
