FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 1943. —— SAILORS ALMOST SHUTOUT SUBS NAVAL BASE NINE JUST) ONE GAME BEHIND PACE- SETTING GUARDSMEN The fast traveling ball club} of the Naval Operating Base} added another scalp to its belt last night when it took the measure of the Sound School by a 4-1 score and kept in sec-| ond place, just one game behind } the undefeated Coast Guard. Next Wednesday these two outfits will meet again and if all goes well in the meantime, it will be the most important} clash of the young campaign cf the American division of the Is- land Service Men’s circuit. A triumph for the NOB will place it in a tie for the top slot and another win for the Coast Guard will place it far out in front of the long race. Last night's clash showed | both teams threatening on sev- eral occasions but neither v able to’ produce the finishing punch for a score until the fifth | frame when the Sound School revealed initial signs 0 weanen- ing. Tannehill, NOB second base~ man, led off with a single and} Wolfe, ‘pitcher, sacrificed him to seconil: Stone grounded out ‘but advanced’ Tannehill to third. | Art Meska, third’ baseman, sin- | gled and'camé all the way home | on an outfield error’ ‘Red Bo-| gart, shortstop, lived on a mis- | play and scored on Ralph Bar- bary’s long rap which was mif‘-| ed by the centerfielder. In the seventh, with two out, Barbary pounded out a_ long} home run across he road in right field. The losers’ lone score came as part of a thrilling rally which opened with Stewart, short-| stop, receiving a walk and Car- gill, pitcher, getting a _ single. Lowney, third baseman, walked to fill the sacks. The next bat- ter flied out to he infield and the flame was nearly snuffed when Constantine, second base- man, hit into a force-out and the threat, was stymied with anoth- er fly-out. Cargill, gave up nine hits, walked one and struck out two, | but his «mates committed, eight. misplays to keep him hot water most of the time.
