PAGE FOUR — WAACs Win At Home and Abroad By MARGARET KERNODLE AP Features Writer FORT KNOX, Ky.,, Mar. 19.— “What are the W. ‘J doing?” That's what people often ask me, because they know I saw the first WAACSs train at Fort Des Moines, Towa. Everybody knows of the gallant job the WAACs are doing in Af-; rica, the important jobs they are; doing:at home. So I visited this ar- mored training base to find out, andchere is what I saw: skisaw 2a’ femitiine five-footer swing’a'batcher knife into a huge! hunk of beef for the evening mess. I watched a motorcycle’ messen- ger, minus make-up, and I found a WAC ration board chairman. Not only are'WACs of this fort replacing men in office and other jobs, but they prepare their own food, “police up” their own bar- racks and officiate in their own company—a complete unit in it-| self. A second question I get fre- quently is: “What do army of- ficers think about the WAACs work as compared to the work of the soldiers they replace?” Colonels, majors, captains and lieutenants in whose offices WAACSs are working say the an- swer is ‘more efficient.” “Look at my desk,” said one colonel. “It’s clear for the first time since I've been here.” . Even the pretty ci pidant of pthe WAAC company;) Gty et Lioyd-Jones, admits W. worked 18 hours a day. the first days here, later only ten, and may cut it down to a regulareday’s work soon. Here are the kinds of jobs the Ft. Knox WAACs do now: More than 50 are clerks of vari- ous kinds; 20 “chauffeurs” drive “carry-alls” (station wagons) or even peeps (but no jeeps, yet, al- though they have licenses to drive heavy trucks); 12 work in com- pany headquarters. Some other RECEIVES LARGE MEAT SHIPMENT John Cobo, proprietor of the Bermuda Meat Market on White street, announces in today’s Citi- zen, that he has received a very large shipment of meat, including beef, veai, 1amp, pork and bacon. He said the shipment is large enough to give every customer their, share. This market will remain open late tonight for the convenience of those who will be unable to shop during Saturday morning. There aré only three officers; one of whom the WAACs are al- ready efficient enough to do with- out. She has beconte the first WAAC officer to replace a regu- lar army officer and is the assist- ant post inspector. She is Lt. Lu- cille Shacklette, of Jefferson- town, Ky., who also has charge of issuing ration books to civilians and Army personnel in the fort — area. WAC life here isn’t all work. Ev- ery WAAC has a date Saturday night, according to their command- ant, and requests: roll in for WAACSs to attend dances around the “fort town.” When the first WAACs came to camp a fanfare greeted them; band and full dress revue. Their supper was cooked for them, even to a cake, sweetened with the message “Welcome WAACs;” and every WAAC bed had been made with nary a pie-bed in the bunch.
