On August 26, 1939, Joe (House) Casa, it was announced, was leading the pitchers of tho local. baseball league, with Rob- ert Bethel close behind. Both were members.of the: champion Key West Conchs. Each had won. two games and lost none, ‘but Casa had struck out 17 to 11 for Bethel and had allowed only five hits to 18 Bethel gave up. Casa walked) five batters and Bethel issued only four bases on balls. Bethel worked on the mound 24 innings to 16 for Casa. M. Griffin and Dickey Na- varro, won, one. and lost none. Conghs tied the score in the third with’ }a} three-run rally and the count remained knotted until the fatal eleventh. Both clubs scored a run in the tenth. “Cates allowed eight of the 16 hits the Trojans piled up. The Conchs made a gallant try in their half of the eleventh but were held to two runs, Mario Hernandez of the Tro- jans poled four safeties and Clayton Sterling added _ three, more. Davila and Dickey Na- varro got two each. Cyril Griffin collected a pair of safeties for the losers, J. Carbonell, M.
