All members are requested to be in attendance, while visiting members are also invited to be present. MARRIAGE MART 26, of North Quincy, Mass. and Theda J. Streadwich, 29, of Somerville, Mass., were married yesterday afternoon by County Judge Ray- mond R. Lord. A marriage license was issued fo Jobn C. Andrea, 22, of Mil- waukee, and Patricia H. Roun- tree, 22, of Waterloo, Iowa. BACK UP THE MAN IN UNIFORM SAYS CHESTERFIELD AD “Start the New Year Right” says the headline “With the Right Combination for More Smoking Pleasure”. The current Chesterfield theme is continued in the copy which points out the importance of proper blending in giving smokers a milder, cool- er and better-tasting cigarette. ‘ The advertsement is illustrated with the ‘picture of an attractive young woman dressed in the uni- form of the Ameriran Women’s Voluntary Services. In’ one hand she holds a sheaf of war bonds and stamps and in the other a letter and a carton of Chester- fields. Reports from men in the Ser¥- ice indicate that no gift is more welcome than cigarettes. On dis- tant fronts, like Africa and the South Pacific, next to a letter from home there is nothing the men would rather receive than cigarettes made in the U.S.A. Chesterfield points this out in its newspaper and radio advertising and urges its readers and listen- ers to send cigarettes regularly to men in uniform. ‘SEVENTY-EIGHTH (Continued from Page One) would make lynching in any state a purely federal offense, and an- other already disputed bill, which caused a mild filibuster in the last congress, would abolish the impo- sition of poll taxes in all states. As the only , states in the Union where poll taxes are collected are in the South, the fight against the bill, as heretofore, will be made by senators and representatives from that part of the country. The bills included: one that would prevent the “silly” practice of the OPA in inspecting automo- bile tires. The comment was that the OPA has already done enough to the owners of automobiles, much of which has been justified, but added that there is no sense whatever in inspecting tires after they have alreday been register- ed with their numerical designa- tion. A bill which, it was declared, will have little chance of becom- ing a law, was introduced by Sen- ator O’Daniel of Texas (“Pass the Biscuits, Pappy”). It would set up prohibited areas throughout the country near all camps occupied by soldiers, against the sale of in- toxicants of any kind. Should the bill become a law, it would adversely affect thousands of sa- loons throughout the country, it ‘was stated. COUNCIL MAKES. , (Continued from Page One) by fire at an estimated loss of $500,000. It was stated that the vessel was anchored too far off shore for the Navy or city fire departments to reach it, and therefore was unable to render any assistance. It was ordered that in the fu- ture all city officials file a monthly report as to their activi- ties, outlining in detail the duties performed during the stated pe- riod. A letter of appreciation was received from Judge Paul D. Barns thanking the council for a resolution adopted recently endorsing him for a place on the United States Court bench. It was ordered that all bicycles be equipped with some kind of a’ light during. the night, and failure to do so will‘call for the arrest of the operators. An ordinance was passed re- quiring the city clerk to collect the Victory Tax of five percent from each employe when pay- rolls are made. A resolution, was passed rela- tive to having our representative in. Tallahassee pass a special act allowing the city to levy a tax, not to exceed $15,000, the same as the county law, to maintain @ new hospital in Key West. WMC order stabilizes 700,000 fn Detroit in their jobs, Frank Fince, THREE CONTESTS OF BASKETBALL TONIGHT Three games of basketball will be played in the high school gym- nasium tonight. The first game, beginning at 7 o‘clock, will be between Air Sta- tion 3 and Fort Taylor; the second, starting at 8, will bring together Army Barracks and Air Station 4, and the final game, starting an hour later, will be between the Athletic Department and_,the Commissary. eect MONROE COUNTY © |, te (Continued from Page One) governor leaves only three com- missioners in the county. As a result of the information that Doughtry and Harris had been granted leaves of absence, there were rumors this morning that “wire-pulling” has been started to have successors ap- pointed, and that the probability is that, the new commission will not organize until the appoint- ments have been made. However, the latter rumor was looked upon as false, as several weeks would elapse before new appointments could qualify for office. Finally, Bervaldi, Roberts and Gomez said that no conferences whatever have been held to agree on appointments that come with in the sphere o fthe county com- mission, or concerning the ‘haiming of the chairman of théeBoard! What caused the bréak i’ the powers of the county commission was the decision of the old com- missioners to adjourn sine die on Monday night. In other years, when a commission went out of} power, the new commissioners were present to organize and as sume the relinquished power. Monday night when the com- missioners adjourned, it was thought that the new commission- ers would meet tomorrow night, CHARLES OGDEN DIES THIS A.M. ita cee SERVICES WILL BE} CONDUCTED TOMORROW AFTERNOON i Charles E. HALF MILLION (Continued from Page One) the fierce charges of the Russian tanks. That weapon of. war, as..has been commented on by militaty experts here, is now being -used far more effectively by the Rus- sians than during any other time since Germany began her un- declared war on this country. Ever since the winter campaign was started by the Russians, they have made but few attacks un- which left the county withou le- gal heads during the interval, but, as the three commissioners said today, no agreement has been made by them to hold such a meet- ing. Army to teach aerial gunnery to all bomber crew members, til the enemy’s positions had been disrupted by Russian tanks, many of which are of American make.
