Sheriff Sawyer LAW-ABIDING DEFENSE AREA A Citizen reporter heard a federal of- ficial remark that it is little short of won- derful how few crimes there are in Key West in view of the fact that its population has more than doubled in the last year or so and housing accommodations are so short of meeting the demand, partciularly among colored folks who have come here io work | for Uncle Sam since the war started. Now and then there is a shooting scrape among the negro newcomers, and now and then women are arrested on ihe | technical charge of vagrancy. Key West critics should bear in mind that in all the cases that have concerned women, only one of them was a Key Wester, and as for the trouble we have had among the colored peo- ple, in only a few instances were they Key West men and women. Even in pre-war days, with a popula- tion one-half the size of what it is today, | Key West has often had more crimes than are occurring here today. Day after day passes without the lgcal policemen and ihe sheriff forces making an arrest.:- Sheriff, Berlin Sawyer often makes the'rounds of the the town between midnight. and. day- light and finds peace and quietiess prevail- ing everywhere. The day he left here with a boy for the reform school at Marianna, said, “I was out from mid- right to daylight, and I heard not a squeak anywhere. The whole town seemed io be asleep.” Key Westers have good reason io feel a sense of pride that our community is as law-abiding as it is. Asa ruie, in war times discretion is thrown to the winds by many men and women too, resulting in an increase | in crime, but the reverse of that condition is in effect in Key West today. It can be said truly that Key West is a law-abiding defense area, In the sixth century before there was an enunciation of Rule in China by. Contucius. anything new under the sun? Christ Is there ever RETO N WEDS CHURCH PROGRAM A nation- Side plan, under which many churches will hold their financial cam- paigns simultaneously, has been recom- mended by a committee of leading church- | men who think that it will tend to place greater emphasis upon the proper finan- cial support of organized religion. Among the participating churches are listed: Episcopal, Northern Baptist, Pres- byterian, U. S. A., Methodist, and others, | including Jewish synagogues. Dr. Earl F. Adams, staff secretary of the Northern Baptist Church, says that the | purpose fo the movement is two-fold: ‘‘To bring the importance of religion forcefully | to the attention of the community; and t) urge individuals to take more active part in church work and to insure adequate finan- cial support through regular giving.” While loeal customs will be considered it is suggested that the canvasses occur in two periods, with emphasis on. *the period: Nov. 15 to Dec. 6, and Feb. 21 io March 14, An effort will be madg}io pre- vent other appeals from conflicting with the , church campaigns.
