Though not generally known, the tuberculosis work of this or- ganization is financed solely by) | the sale‘of these seals. This sea- son marks the thirty-fifth annual Christmas Seal sale, and no one with charity in his heart can gainsay the importance of help- ing the worthy cause. Until last year, Christmas Seal funds collected in Key West went back to the national or- ganization for distribution. This year, however, Monroe county has formed its own group, offi cially known as the Monroe County Tuberculosis and Health Association. Joe Allen, young and popular civie leader, is gen- eral chairman, with Jerry Trevor, another individual keenly alive to all that is beneficial to Key West and vicinity, as treasurer. Of the money obtained local- ly, 60 per cent will be sent to the organization headquarters, for use in its widespread activi- ties, while 40 per cent will re- main in the county to be utilized in helping tuberculosis victims here. Some 1500 residents of Key West today received letters from the local group containing printed material, return envelopes and two dollars worth of Christmas seals. Those who wish to make their contribution more Cracks And Comments __FLONIDA’ CRACKER WON AND LOST: Did you hear how John Carbonell, just relected as city councilman, lost a bet against himself? A lady, who shall be nameless, wagered that he would finish first or sec- ond in the council race. Big John figured he would be elected again, of course, but did not expect to practically top the list. Either “the popular councilman és a modest individual, or doesn’t realize his own voting strength, because the lady won her best— he was second: PRACTICING FOR THE RED CROSS BALL? Noted at a local night spot was Frank Sheppard dancing a mean rhumba, Key West style. Pretty nifty work, too. ROSE GARDEN: Pena Morales has a magic touch with roses; in fact, with any shrubs or flowers. With a minimum of care and a loving pat now and then, any- thing he plants seems to thrive and blossom profusely. Must lead a good life, this Pena. RED CROSS BALL: The an- nual Red Cross Ball will be held at the Stork Club on Saturday, December 6. Always an out- standing event in Key West, the affair affords local belles an opportunity to don their prettiest frocks and startle their ¢avliers with fashionable new hair-dos. Dancing will begir: at 10~-o’clock and continue until dawn breaks over Boca Chica or thereabouts. GROWING UP: With all this {defense activity, Key West is gaining .a bit of boomtown flav- or, especially on Saturday nights. On one corner a religious meet-! ing holds forth, with ringing hymns and sermons, sublimely oblivious to the milling life of the street. Across the way groups} stroll by, headed for local bistros and attendant revelry. Weary young mothers wander in and jout of the five-and-ten, coaxing their wearier offsprings who ought to be safely in hed, to be good. Well, it takes all types and kinds to make up a world— even the little world of Key West. But we can’t help but miss the peace and serenity of former years when nobody thought of war. At the local fire.station, for. instance, firemen were busy folding ~ the attractive Christmas seals, which came from the North in huge sheets, while high school vol- unteers helped in the addressing of envelopes. The Junior Wom- an’s Club, under the direction of Mrs. Joe Lopez, assembled the material, while boy scouts, un- der the guidance of Scoutmasters Milton Sawyer and Allen Hamp- ton, sealed and stamped the en- velopes and got them ready for Uncle Sam to deliver. Making out the necessary lists fell to the lot of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, with Joe Pinder, Joe Allen and Dan Har- rison burning the midnight oil to compile the information. Mrs. J. J.
