The people of the conquered nations of Europe have a good idea of what Hitler’s new order means. Russia is doing ‘a better job in fighting Hitler than England, so why not favor that | coutitry in the operation of the Lease-Lend Act. From the law of retribution there is no } ie © -eseape and the miser must pay for his + miserliness and the extortioner for his ex- tortions. Trading at home is a form of loyalty that pays dividends; the money that cir- culates, from store to store, in Key West, is the money that you might get again. This is a nation of talkers and we cer- tainly keep our tongues wazging, for good and bad purposes. A proof of our buccal activities is the ninety-seyen million seven hundred thousand average daily telephone eenyersations. Former mayor of San Antonio, Texas, Maury Maverick, and now an official of OPM division of Priority Applications, said recently: “I don’t hate nobody but Hitler.” Aipparently, he doesn’t know that he doesn’t hate Hitler. Not every voter thinks while casting his vote. > ‘Advice to the Government on saving paper: Cut out half the questions on in- stamps and bonds, cut the num- her of enclosures from six to two. ..Abandon he f writing week— foolish idea of a letter will be sent through the post of- fice at deficit, anyway. . .Cut out at te 90 pi St of the so-called news releases , -_ Appoint a Congressionai te all unnecessary, use- questionaires and _ departments.— Member Of the Asorinied Press Asmocia Press te, exclu Pat afttrthes Stee apse cree | . ot et Bierce eres 5} cidentally, that the county and city bank tuary notices, ete., will be charged for at | tax statements. . .in the mail campaign | THE KEY WEST CITIZEN CAPITAL CONSENSUS By WM. GRIFFIS_ } i WHAT TO DO WITH THEM AFFIC | Wrathful as they have a right to be TIPS ano QUIPS over the continued vandalism and depreda- | tions on their property, Key West residents | scarcely are just when they lay the blame | | or the situation entirely on the shoulders | either of the sheriff’s oifice, or the juvenile | court. j Actually, there is little either depart- ment can do under existing conditions, and ;'the offended householders would be more | in Fieri siderab} quota « | logical if they took their complaints to the | | door of the county commission or city coun- | cil. Vandalism, as we have said many times before, must be stopped in Key West | —and it can’t be stopped either by the | sheriff’s office or juvenile court without ! some financial help. We fully realize, in- | KEY WEST IN DAYS GONE BY Happenings On This Date Ten ord Years Ago As Taken From FESSOR Files Of The Citizen Fane accounts have their limitations. The point is smply that there is nothing | to be done with the youthful offenders when | they are caught, We aren't discussing pranks now. Many of the cases are serious, and the of- fenses of some of the wild boys of Key West are serious enough to warrant their £ imprisonment—but where? There is no reason in the world why | the people of this city should be forced to submit to a reign of lawlessness on the part of vandals, whether they are young or old. They should be caught and punished. But again, how? Without a detention home of its own, | Monroe county has the legal right to send | young law violators to the home in Dade _ county, but there is no money foy the pur- | pose. The county also has the right to send | minor law violators to the state industrial | school, but the school is crowded, and they can’t get in. | What it adds up to is a situation where here aboard a pilot the freighter guard headquarters | the sheriff's office catches the boys, turns them over to the juvenile court, which tells them to be good boys and turns them loose to go right back to stealing and wrecking. ‘Four boys caught in the act of stealing by a | resident last week told him they had been on the detention list “lots of times.” Threatened by him with ‘“‘a licking and | a trip to the reform school,” one of them cracked right back: “Go | they’ve got a waiting list of 100 there now | and they couldn’t put me in if they wanted to.” than anyone in it before—55. n on, mister, CRIMPING BOND RACKET On the theory that “a little wisdom is a dangerous thing,” it would be a good idea } to teach the wise little men that there is } more in the world than they know. But it will take the cooperation of the entire city. Don’t just leave it to the law, for the law as it stands here can’t do any more about it than you can. HOW TO EDUCATE YOURSELF This editorial is addressed to middle- aged individuals who feel that their educa- tional opportunities have not been as com- plete as they would have liked. Conscious of this lack of training, some people bemoan the lost days and sink into a state of semi-ignorance, without making any effort to become better informed. We would call their attention tothe fact that there are only two requisites to a good edu- cation, reading and thinking. There is no person in Key West, of any age, who cannot become well-informed in | a year or two of intelligent reading, supple- mented by a little thinking. Stop the habit of taking opinions from anybody and begin trying to study some problems for the pur- pose of making up your own mind. To the individual who does not know where to start we would suggest beginaing on a subject in which you are interested. | If it is the war in Europe, read about it and then read some more. If it is a technical subject that entrances your imagination, ask advice from some person who knows something about it. Get a book on the sub- c ject and, if it takes six months, read it until you understand it. Her marriage jE. Neff will be solemn early date. tor T Todav’s Birthd ys U.S. Senator Joseph H. Even if you have only a half hour a day, ‘take advantage of it and begin to acquire new information. Never mind about the better educated; make it your business to improve yourself. We know many excellent individuals who have failed to take advantage of their own leisure time to read and learn but who | constantly lament that they are not ‘“edu- | eated.”” The matter of becoming well-in- | formed does not hinge upon a college de- gree; it is a matter of reading and thinking.
