On the smali Lake Champlain, despite bad conditions and small crude boats, the then embryonic force defeated the British seamen and secured the integrity of the United States Navy in the world at large. Decatur wiped out the Tripoli pirates in the Mediterranean Sea, in order that the high seas might be safe fot international commerce Perry opened the Orient for the world’s commerce with ever growing United States Navy. John Dewey built up the prestige of the American naval forces by giving Cuba and the Philippines power to stand them- selves up as equal nations in the world. The navy assisted Cuba in the severance of her relations with Spain, and again Dewey figured greatly in the vicious Battle of Manila. Admiral Byrd, with his party claimed the Antarctic as a United States possession. The invaluable research able be obtained in the far north is an important fac- tor in the history of this naval ex- ploration. Admiral Greely -pushed the American flag, through extreme hardships, farther than it had ever been carried. In 1932 the speaker held a conversation with the 81 year old admiral, at which time the elder officer stated that the trouble with American youth is the fact that they are leading mauch too easy a life,.and are not inured to hardships and sacrifices, inevitably taking the easiest issue available. In conclusion, Mr. Downes ex- pressed his w that the youth of today would equip themselves with clean living, respect for God and country, and straightfor- | ward look into the future. Byrd, Greely, Perry, Dewey and Decatur stood for the first line of defense that has kept enemies from Am- erican shores for more than a hundred years. and their in- domitable courage should be held high as an excellent example for American youth. The program closed with the hearty applause of an exceedingly terested audi- ence and the song, “God Bless Am- erica.” Gibson Family Has Returned Home Millard B.
