An Answer To Ellis Hollums It seems rather remiarkable that Ellis Hollums, managing editor of the Miami Herald, finds ‘Miami to be so pure and so little in need of crusading (eformetss that he eee to devote his attention to Key West. ‘Or perhaps it is not.so fakicfkabta, after all. Whenever it seems safe, the Miami Herald has been the bitter foe of or- ganized labor: whenever it felt that organized labor was too strong to be attacked with safety, as it is in Miami today, it has truckled to it. Nor is it remarkable that, published in the homp of white slavery and gangster-controlled gambling, with a police de- partment that turns the heat on and off prostitution and gambling as seems to be most profitable at the moment. that it would try to divert attention from its own dirty nest by alleging that the people of Key West can not manage their own affairs without its expert advice. ‘A wave of indignation sweeps over the working men of this city at this uninvited intrusion of an inspired attack upon their efforts to better thier condition by that collective bar- which the laws of the country has set up to protect them from the exploitation of greedy profiteers. ‘That the cost of living is higher in Key West. that the scale of wages is lower than it is in Miami and that Miami workmen are systematically displacing Key West men of equal, and in many cases, superior skill: and that the Key West men have exhausted every effort to have the National Labor Board pay attention to their situation is unquestioned. It would be a boon to Key West if The Key West Citizen could apa over = become a morning paper and so offer to Peg unity to patronize a home industry ‘and arcana and Wea cavice from a neighbor conversant with Satimation wat oot decors ae allen abest that fries 40 jivert attenticn from the vicious situation in its own town by attack ing its neighbors. of fact. if we are going to discuss diseased eu eaatt igi! ‘West, as Hollums did today, it is fairly well tablished that most of them made their headquarters in Miami before moving in here.
