| | . er occupied countlies, By JAY ALLEN Six months ago I fell into the ‘clutches of the Gestapo and was thrown into jail in occupied France. I was put there to stop me from finding out what I wanted to know. But the joke is ~on the Nazis because there, in the Military Prison at Chalon, I found out much more than I could possibly have uncovered had I been free to move about. Tt was in March when. I tried to cross over from what people quaintly called’) “free” France itito the occupied: zone,’ and was Picked up by a‘German customs Guard, stationed along the dem- reation line between. occupied and unoccupied France, They’re i g ‘icient fellows, those ey use. police dogs, and @ nasty habit of plant- mines in the dark in places where they suspect that people are slipping through. In Chalon I mingled and talk- ed freely with the other prison- ers, thousands of them, French- men from every class of life, Bel- gians, Hollanders, men from oth- in fact from most of occupied Europe. I heard old French conserva- tives in my jail whoop with joy when the news was smuggled in to us of Mr, Churchill's great Speech the day Hitler attacked Russia, in which he said that any enemy of Hitler was Brit- ain’s friend, French conserva- tives, Bank of France people, yet they were glad that Russia had joined Britain in fighting Hitler! ‘That is the set-up in France today. It is my considered opin- that at least ninety-five per cent of the French people loathe the Nazis, don’t want any part of a Hitler Europe and pray for a British victory After a year of occupation, even those who. sec- retly hoped and worked for the triumph of fascism in Europe are so disillusioned and so em- bittered, they don’t care who beats Hitler, as long as he is beaten. ~ ‘They are the people who were the French _isolationists, _who were so friendly to the Nazis from 1936 on, who tolerated their advances everywhere, They were the people who didn’t want to “die for Danzig’, As it turn- ed out, they didn’t want to die for France, nor even to fight. They thought that a_ victory for German fascism would mean that ‘in France, they, the French fascists, would ‘find. themselves atthe top of the heap.;; But the Germans have brought’. German fascism to France, not» French ‘fascism. Now ithe| great French industrialists, ‘and «the people who “belonged to such’ groups as the Croix du Feu, find them- selves stripped, pillaged, denud- ed. ' Their factories, newspapers and homes have been requisi- tiotied or downright confiscated by the Nazis with French money. The French pay four hundred million franes a day to the Ger- mans for what are called occu- pation costs. The Germans spend about two hundred millions the army: of occupation. With the rest they buy everything— raw materials, machine , tools, railway cars, everything. “So they are disillusioned, these people who did not want to die for Dafizig, nor even for France. Now they ate ‘being‘asked to die for Getmafiy and @ Nazi world. They ‘ate’ being foreed to create 4’ new world order in which the Germahs Will/bé “their ® masters, ‘That’is ‘what has thappenéde to théeni, "these péople'+ who >-ywere, and sincerely, for France first! I don’t think there were many Frenchmen who knowingly co- operated in the downfall of their country. Most of those who be- lieved in opportunism and inac- tion were sincere patriots and devoted to what they considered the best interests of France. But the Nazi propaganda agencies made sure that they had plenty. of suport and that their views were ughly publicized. And what worries these people now is that, here in America, we seem to be falling for the same sort of pro da that was re- sponsible on | the callapse of ' portion, kkk Tells Of France Today France. Again and again I was asked how the people of Amer- what the Nazis were doing here, of how devilishly effective their | methods could : aan ‘That!is’ the changed the!Frerithpéople after a year of occupatidn >t Witl®..the’ excep- tion’ of Admiral Darlan and a handful of men who have been bought up or what have personal interest in a Nazi’ victory, the French people are resisting the Nazis. All through the spring I Saw an impressive amount of passive resistance. Passive re- sistance, rather than active sab- otage, because penalities were and are frightful. While I was in Chalon a six- teen-year-old peasant boy pulled wire when driving into his field with a hayrick. Quite by acci- dent. The wire had been strung during the night. He was shot and an announcement of his ex- jecution was posted on walls throughout the region. So the general feeling was that the best thing to do was to wait —up until a few weeks’ago. As we know, thousands have re- ‘cently been arrested “for” active ‘sabotage, and there “have been many executions, A new phase of resistance has begun in France; and I think it will continue. ‘The French people have been won- derfully heartened by’ develop- ments on Germany's eastern front and they look hopefully to America. oe I used to tell my ‘fellow jail- birds that we were waking up in America; but now that I am | home, I wonder. If the Nazis | don’t succeed in doing anything more than promoting a certain amount of discord and disunion here in the United States, they | still accomplish a great deal. All| over the rest of the world their agents point to that same discord and disunion, and make the most of it. I believe that the outcome of the entire war, the salvation of + the world depends’ on what we) and the British can do concretely in the way of immediate military help, The way to win this war is to begin winning it. Words and {promises are not enough, any more, German propaganda is having a devastating effect, here and over there. You can’t fight it with propaganda, not at this stage. We don’t need to propa- gandize our friends, the submerg- ed peoples of France and of all Europe. We've got to convince them that democratic victory is inevitable, And we can do that} by acts alone. | As a prelude to acts I suggest | that we present to the world the face of a nation united! | t | Observation taken at 7:30 a. m.,,| 75th Mer.
